How come Pharrell solo career didn't take off like Kanye's?

Because Pharell is not a good solo artist? He doesnt make good solo albums? He isnt a good solo rapper? and he doesnt rap about anything outside of the norm?

I mean not putting kanye on a pedastal at all, but he at least puts together good albums, tries to develop a flow/delivery that has energy, and while he does have ghost writers he doesnt have them write songs always about the same old thing...

Personally i think his rapping is nothing spectacular, i don't enjoy his singing (i don't hink he can pull the falsetto type singing, needs vocal lessons maybe) and i've never felt like checking his album out.

Kanye on the other hand usually has 2 to 3 interesting songs substance wise per album to the point where you're actually curious about his music and often one of the songs is the single.

musically, they're both interesting but I'm usually more curious about which musical direction kanye is going on the beat side. and keep in mind this is coming from someone who thinks kanye acts bytchmade a lot of times.

I liked 'In My Mind' :yeshrug:

Pharrell isn't a great rapper but he knows what sound suits him, how to make a cohesive project and he's half of one of the greatest production duos. That goes a long way.

Pharrell can't actually sing so the range of songs he is able to make is limited... he's also not looked at as a real rapper so who is his audience to give him legitimacy? Kanye is actually considered a dope rapper & is very versatile.

People can only listen to so many falseto songs with struggle runs. Hate Kanye all u want he is respected as a Rapper among the media & his peers but people don't actually respect Pharrell as a singer or a rapper...

Kanyes main goal is attention, Pharell's main goal is fukking supermodels in undisclosed locations

:ohhh::ehh:

I'd say Pharell easily has it "better" than Kanye now. Dudes kind of stays in the background while being a star in his own right (if that makes sense), drops dope songs here and there with little to no pressure. I'm sure he works his ass off but from afar it seems he's living the ultimate teenager dream: fame, money, women with little stress and pressure. I personnaly always felt producers have it "better" than rappers, in the sense that media isn't all up in your life all the time.

He was wise enough to see that the rapping thing wasn't really for him, and he seems to just enjoy his life without trying to be this über-producer who influences culture. And by being humble, he's actually one of the bigges names out there.

I think a lot of it is simply down to ambition.

Being this super big rap star was always Kanye's goal. Pharrell's a super creative himself but the solo or even group thing is definitely an after thought. Pharrell doesn't put the same amount of passion into his solo albums as Kanye. You can hear it.

Pusha said it best: Pharrell does what feels dope and good to him. Whatever it is, it will be. Albums, songs, a Clipse album whatever. Kanye goes to werk. If it's not dope - back to the studio. He'll work on it, re-write that verse, change the production here, new instrument there. Kanye is meticulous, Pharrell is one creative dude. Kanye would kill himself if his albums flopped, the reviews were bad etc. Pharrell would just move onto whatever new creative project he's working on.
