It’s an age/ generational thing.
The stereotypical NY accents you think of where they don’t pronounce their R’s instead they pronounce it AWW are mostly people 40 and up.
Millenials and gen Z don’t have accents for the most part. Maybe older millenials born in the early 80’s.
Also a class thing. Mostly middle and working class have accents. If you came from a rich or upper middle class home you’re probably not gonna talk like Andrew Dice Clay.
