Yes, in effect, they believed that Congress had the power to police and would act accordingly if the executive branch stepped out of line.

In general, that’s happened to a certain extent. Until now.
Maybe some of the history guys on here can explain better but I don’t think there’s been anything comparable in American politics to the current Republican platform and their singular plays for power.

The electoral college was supposed to stop people like Trump from getting elected. The impeachment process was supposed to remove people like him from office.
They failed to prevent the formation of a two-party system, so here we are.
that’s not true the electoral college was specifically created to placate the slave states and then them more of a say than majority states in regards to population
That’s part of the reason it was created. But they also didn’t want a bunch of ignorant, uneducated people choosing the president.
