She's actually very talented:
  1. Dancing
  2. Singing
  3. Acting - Her role in Selena really set it off. Not saying that she's some supremely talented actress, but she has skills and a good screen presence.
  4. Dat ass

She is a hustler, but they ain't call her J.Ho back in the day for nothing :mjpls:

She was rejected as an ILC dancer first season. How you think she got there season 2 :mjpls:

Rosie Perez hates her (who was the choreographer for The Fly Girls) :pachaha:

Her first single was a knock on a Change Moore song. Darkchild created a damn near replica after Puff said he wanted Chante's song for her.

Can't underestimate the importance of a fantastic agent.

Also her formula was flawless. She cornered the music market by being down with blacks and cornered the movie market by being down with Cacs. She fukked damn near every famous Cac on screen (Clooney, Fiennes, Mcconaughey, Affleck) and did music with every famous Hip Hop artist (Nas, Diddy, Ja-Rule, LL Cool J, Jadakiss)

Really her career should serve as an example for all racially ambiguous actresses/singers

Here's the reason why...

Around that time' late 90s, there was a 'Latin explosion' in music. Ricky Martin [Vida Loca], Enrique Iglesias [Bailsmos] were tearing up the charts. Everyone was saying that this is the next big thing in music. Record executives across the board were trying to ride that wave and thus seeking any artist they could find as the next big crossover star.

One strategy was to get Latino stars already popular in Latino countries to make English-speaking albums [see Shakira] and the other approach was to find some US-based Latino artist and market them. It just so happened that Jennifer Lopez had sufficient name recognition at that time due to a few movies, including Selena. She was a perfect fit. Song writers and producers made some songs for her and the marketing teams went to work. That's essentially it.

This.

And Puffy didn't have that much to do with her career.

Movies and tv shows
Yep. Not to mention her hit songs were sung and written by other people such as Ashanti on "I'm Real remix" and Christina Milian on "Play", Puff and Irv just blended their voices with J. Lo's to make her sound better.
I always knew about Play & Milian cause I knew it was her song & could hear her vocals in the song but never knew about Ashanti with I'm Real. But it makes sense

Puffy had nothing to do With J Lo's career.
This.

And Puffy didn't have that much to do with her career.

Yes he did. He helped her steal beats from black artist such as chante moore, mariah carey, ashanti, christina millian plus many more. That's why mariah carey still doesn't know her and it's been 20-30 years. Dating him also got her a wider fan base, it let her better reach the urban people and it kept her name in the tabloids. That's free promo.

Crazy work ethic, a good look, and a great agent. Most of the top Pop Stars/Movie Stars aren't all that talented - they just have an inhumane will to succeed, make the right choices, and work constantly. Look at Rihanna, for instance.

Yes, but Rihanna can sing though, and way better than jlo. She didn't always have the best technique, but she could sing. It sounds like she has gotten voice lessons within the past few years and began to take it seriously. Here she is singing when she first got signed.

She already had a nice voice, if she would've gotten training at the beginning of her career, she would've been greater earlier.

Can't underestimate the importance of a fantastic agent.

Also her formula was flawless. She cornered the music market by being down with blacks and cornered the movie market by being down with Cacs. It could be an inspiriation or good example for anyone, not just someone who looks racially ambiguous. Jlo isn't even racially ambiguous herself.

People are getting over that look anyway. There are so many girls in the industry who look like that already and none of them have popped.

A black woman who is attractive and not racially ambiguous like everyone else who is already there is, with a great work ethic and who believes in putting out quality is who is going to pop. I was thinking justine skye, but I've heard some of her newer music, plus she hangs out with the kardashians, so I don't think it'll work out for her. I think it'll be someone new.

I always said she was overrated and that she was white boys first taste of a mainstream Latina.... Growing up in Bushwick/Williamsburg back in the day, you could go to the South Side, Graham Avenue, Knickerbocker Ave. and on a bad day find at least five broads waaaaaaaaaaay better. And if you went up to East Harlem, Washington Heights, or Grand Concourse, you'd probably do even better.
