The acting is still over the top but there are some real poignant commentaries and messages in the film.

Melvin tried the “gentle way” with Jodie early in the film and when Jodie was unreceptive he went the “fukk it” route and just took the fukk over. Jodie was a nikka who HAD to learn the hard way. If you look, Jodie basically learned the hard way throughout the entire damn flick being hard headed and cocky. Melvin probably saw alot of his younger self in Jodie and was trying to keep him out the joint or dead in the street by basically being that nikka Jodie couldn’t budge.

Melvin’s whole philosophy was spelled out in the film itself

“See you want your mama to be your woman. But this hear. This MY Woman!”

Melvin was letting Jodie know that the mama’s boy gig was up. It was time to grow up and leave the nest and be a grown ass man.
