Don't Believe the Hype
Communication and the sharing of ideas. Also, trial & error, obviously. All these factors coupled with the exponential increase in population = innovation.

A better question would be why didn't the world advance quicker.

Like, we should've had the Internet a long time ago. We've advanced a lot in just the past 10 years just look at computers and smart phones.

Anyways.... The things people are creating now or trying to create were thought off decades ago.

Evolution is exponential. The human brain doubles its knowledge everyday.
If it wasn't for the government and big corporations holding us down the human civilization would be far more advanced not only technology wise, but also on a spiritual level.
Yes, major wars are a big catalyst for technological advancement because that means big $$$ for those big corporations and the government.

War definitely helps because it pushes countries to innovate to outdo other countries. World War 2 basically created our modern society today. Almost everything we have today is just more advanced versions of WW2 stuff. But war has always been happening.

We got to the point where we became modern enough where we could share ideas much faster and we became more globalized allowing the world's best minds to work together. This sped up innovation. The discovery electricity was also a huge catalyst, on the same tier as fire and the wheel, that opened up new doors not previously available.

Many people believe that if the Roman Empire had stayed together, they may of only been a couple hundred years from having electricity back around 400AD, and that the Roman collapse set technology growth back roughly 1,000 years in some areas.
