Ppl complain about the city losing its identity. But if you listened to Biggie, the old NY sounded like a nightmare. Ppl complain about gentrified cities losing their “soul” as if high homicide rates high drug addiction and general societal decay wasn’t part of that “soul” and “gritty” era.

:skip:
It’s was a nightmare, NYC average 2,000 a year during the early 90s.

Because gentrification isn't just about getting rid of crap buildings or shops. It's about getting rid of the people too.

Dudes on here that complain about the amount of crime today have no idea how much progress has been made.

Even the late 2000s when I was coming up, you could get robbed on the train.

Now people are walking around with all types of expensive shyt without even worrying about their surroundings. Don't even look up from their phones.

Although I was part of the problem, I like how the city cleaned up.

Not only Times Square but that area on the west side near the Tunnel...used to be dozens of hookers from like 27th St. to around 32nd. Just blatantly in the street stopping cars. Mad traffic at 2'oclock in the morning. Giuliani is a crooked racist b*stard but I can't blame him for cleaning that up :francis:

One of the bigger clean ups was the subways.
Getting rid of all the graffiti was the start of it.
Making sure people were being arrested for jumping the turnstile, and making the switch to metro cards.
Putting cops on the trains.
Cleaning up stations full of garbage.
Making sure stations were well lit, train cars too.
Making sure the trains ran on time.
Making sure booths had workers inside.

Dinkins started it with putting more cops on the subways but Giuliani sent it into overdrive by bringing in Bratton and the Broken Windows theory. He cleaned up Manhattan but everywhere else in the city just ended up with a shyt ton more cops and people going to jail for little shyt (BWT).

The Deuce on HBO is all about how TS got cleaned up. Business investors bought all that property to help bring in more commerce so the Mayor of NY had the NYPD clean up all the street walkers and whore houses.

I went to school at John Jay and in that school a well respected criminal justice school across the world we were taught guilliani and his policies were overrated.

Also the Dinkins who was a black mayor actually started the process of NyC becoming bettter. It was unnoticeable because his progress was slower than guilliani and we were still in the crack epedemic when he left.

typical blame the black guy so the white guy holds no accountability. Dinkins did a lot for the city

Sounds accurate....Crime rates dropped in many major cities (Dallas, LA, Houston, Atlanta, DC, etc...) and the US as a whole starting in the mid 90s, yet Giuliani is given all this credit for NYC’s crime declining.

Seems like Giuliani just lucked out with his timing.
