That's why I'll never stop being a field engineer until the day I retire. I'm just not built anymore to sit in the same place all day, every day and deal with bullshyt office politics. Been there and done that.
The good thing about working in IT as a field engineer is that it keeps you busy so you never get bored and if you finish all your assigned jobs and nothing else comes through, then you can finish early for the day and still get paid for the whole day. Nuff times when I'm on the day shift I'm at home by say, 3pm even though the scheduled finishing time is 6pm.
When you're in an office and there's nothing else to do, you still have to hang around until finishing time.....you might get to leave 15 minutes early if your manager is in a good mood, but that's the most you'll get. Plus most social network sites are blocked and the rest is monitored so it's of very little use anyway.
I just love when I pass through the offices and people bored out of their minds ask me where my next job is and I'm like "nah, I'm finished for the day. I might head over to Oxford Street and chill" when it's not even 3pm yet on some
