Its adaptation. Women have always had multiple options, and with social media the shyt has gotten even worse. Don't believe for a second you are the only dude she's talking to until you get a firm "we're exclusive" confirmation. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, cause if/when the shyt gets tipped over, you're gonna be looking assed out and confused.
Then you start that bitter Kent cycle instead of having another on your list to move on to. Now you don't need to be a liar or anything out here, but don't be ready to give folks your pension and shyt after just a few weeks of talking.

I have 2 with another who's a possible and I just don't have time to keep em all happy, with school, work, gym, and time to myself
