How do you answer this question by new employer..." what was your last salary", do you lie?

that's what you think. you think if you say you making 100K, they gonna give up 200K?

bottom line, ALWAYS lie about this. unless they looking at your tax returns, they wont know.

I usually exaggerate by 10%. Or I tell them what my total income was, since total income includes rental and dividend income, so technically it's not lying. :scheme:

I've never had a problem getting more that the last place and I've never lied about salary. I don't even think I would take a job that was trying to pay me based on what I made at the last place. What if I had additional training or education since that time? I can't even comprehend that.

yes I call it white lies.

You go low, they will lowball you but don't go way over the top.

Be smart.

Same way you answer, "desired salary?". You looking for 60k, you say 65k. As mentioned above just don't over exaggerate it.

companies look out for their interest before they look out for you, keep it in the back of your mind.
I guess I'm used to working with recruiters. They always ask my rate/salary up front so I rarely get asked about what I made before.
