if it aint a clearance job, they don't usually go that far. You an always use the bonus option to make up for the difference when they ask.:sas1:

As you can tell some of us are a pro at this :sas2:
So if you making lets say $100 K but want to push it to $125K, how would you structure that discussion with the new company :sas2:

I was in here in DC making 60k back in 2009, they asking me how much I made currently, I said 80k. Next day they offer me a job for 100k.

$40,000 Raised.:to::blessed:

Actually brought a tear to my eye, bcuz my currently job was ending. Crazy thing is, if I wouldve said 60k I probably wouldn't have gotten the job. Seems IT companies look at current salaries as experience. It's like the club, if you're making a lot already, you must be official.

Always, always, always lie. I deal with a lot of recruiters and I know those fukkers have three numbers in mind:

The budget they're getting from the client
The number they want to keep for themselves
The range they're willing to pay out

First contract I took on, I later found out that the company I was working for was paying $50/hr for my work and I was getting $15. When the next recruiter called, I told them $20/hr. They matched. As long as it sounds within reason for the position you were working, they'll match, go over, or attempt to lowball. If they lowball
:camby:

Do your research. Mute the phone for a minute or two while they're going over job description and other rambling, take the time to do a quick google search. Use glassdoor. Don't get dikked out of money you could get just to have a job. If your resume is straight, someone else will be calling soon enough.

I never understood why employers do this, they should be basing your salary on your duties/the market rate, not what you've made in the past.

Reasoning, at least in the IT contracting game from what I know.

80k - 95k range scenario
Most managers have a range in what they can pay. If you're overqualified and want you, they'll come out and say the most we can pay is 90k. "I'll see what I can do." Come back with 95k. The real max is like 100k.

60k - 75k range scenario
If they're not really excited about you, but you could work for the right price.. Theyll ask you how much are you currently making. If you say 55k, you're getting 60k. If you say 70k, you're going to the bushes.

In the real world nobody cares about being fair. They're trying to net the most profit as possible.

You have to take away their leverage against you or else they will exploit you.

It's foolish to think in a capitalist society if you were just earning 40k they're going to just offer you 80k. They know they can offer you 60, they pocket 20k for a job they usually paid 80k for, and you still get a 50% raise over what you're making now.

It's happening all across America right now in this terrible job economy. They're paying less money for more work cause they know you're desperate:steviej:
