How do you answer this question by new employer..." what was your last salary", do you lie?

How do you set yourself apart and sell yourself :lupe:

The first thing I do is research the company and/or position salary. Set your minimum at $125k if that's what you want, but if you research a company and the average salary for a similar position at that company is $135k, ask for that. After that just try to be yourself. If you have the job description, look at the duties and try to tie them back to actual projects you've worked on. They love it when you've "saved money and improved the efficiency of the company".

In the real world nobody cares about being fair. They're trying to net the most profit as possible.

You have to take away their leverage against you or else they will exploit you.

It's foolish to think in a capitalist society if you were just earning 40k they're going to just offer you 80k. They know they can offer you 60, they pocket 20k for a job they usually paid 80k for, and you still get a 50% raise over what you're making now.

It's happening all across America right now in this terrible job economy. They're paying less money for more work cause they know you're desperate:steviej:
Just because you were getting paid $40k doesn't mean that's what you worth. There is no better way to be permanently underpaid than go around focusing on getting paid more than the last job you had. You have a certain set of skills and abilities that companies are willing to pay for. Know what your skills are worth in the current job market and then set your salary requirements based on that.

That's not the point.

you said things like

I tell them the truth. My old salary has jack shyt to do with the one I'm currently asking for.
I've never had a problem getting more that the last place and I've never lied about salary. I don't even think I would take a job that was trying to pay me based on what I made at the last place. What if I had additional training or education since that time? I can't even comprehend that.

Which is a completely naive way to think.

A companys primary concern is to maximize profits. The way you think, gives them room to exploit you.
