I usually only do this on my 5th set if I wanna hit a new max for bench, overhead, squats or deads.

It wouldnt be a true max but usually thats when I do the highest weight nonetheless.
For instance today when I did deadlifts
Started with 135 as a practice set
2 sets of 185, 8 times
1 set of 235, 5 times and then til failure (3 times)
255 once
School me though. Would i be better off going for a new max right out the gate as I'm fresh, after 1 practice set...at I guess the 3rd right in the middle.

I used to do reverse pyramid as a beginner but when i added practice and drop sets I kinda just assumed the one rep max was done towards the end.
