Are You Really Super Rich? It Depends on How Much You Make — And What State You Live In

state-one-percent-map-with-source.jpg

The map above, produced by Business Insider using 2012 Minnesota Population Center IPUMS data, shows how much a household needs to earn in a year to be in the top one percent of any given state’s income distribution.

In big chunks of the middle of the country — Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arkansas and Alabama — a household can be in the top one percent making less than $300,000.

But a household needs to make more than half a million dollars to be in the top one percent in New York and New Jersey, and the apparently ritziest state, Connecticut, is a further cut above: $642,000.

The median annual U.S. household income in 2012, according to Census Bureau data, was just above $51,000.

@GinaThatAintNoDamnPuppy! you might need to objectively rethink your views on this.

You're a good poster in other threads so i'm just asking you to just rethink how you feel about this topic.

If you're a millionaire that's cool but i doubt you're a billionaire that truly fathoms the amount of wealth on this forbes list.
What effect does this Forbes list have on my life? These guys having money doesn't affect my ability to make money, as far as I know.

When you say "objectively rethink" what you really mean is come around to your way of thinking so you don't have to mull over the difficult questions I've been asking you.

I am def not saying all rich people play fair and that there is no theft whatsoever.... but the idea that any and all accumulated wealth is abhorrent and depraved as you keep seeming to suggest is wrong. Your view on extreme wealth boils down to poorly intellectualized jealousy.

Resources in the world are finite. Private property relations are designed to secure wealth to the ruling class (the state backs this unequal distribution of wealth with force). The more resources are concentrated, the less everyone outside of the ruling class has.

No it comes down to having to deal with the destructive ways of kids who i coach on my High School basketball team that live in the ghetto. As for myself i have always lived in the suburbs in a nice home. And every winter of my 20's i lived in South Beach Miami from January-April. I went to college on a basketball scholarship. I have family members in some the highest levels of the military and intelligence. My Grandfather was the US top specialist in ................ for Dupont from 1960-1985.

So personally i have nothing to be jealous about.

But if you don't think the suffering in the ghetto directly connects to this forbes list you are sadly mistaken.

Have you ever had to deal with the stress of teenage boys from the ghetto shooting each other on a regular basis?

and this is one of the main reasons they don't wanna talk about.

Billionaires are a product of exploitation of capitalism and a failure of capitalism.

Capitalism is working as intended; the very existence of billionaires is proof of that. And exploitation is the name of the game under capitalism. :yeshrug:

It isn't about whether the system is "working" or "failing." There are winners and losers... Who is the system working for, and who is it working against? When we answer that question and identify the group it is working against, the course of action for that group becomes clear.

Schools aren't really meant to teach you, they're meant to socialize you into being an obedient subject under capitalism and other dominant norms/ideologies. So maybe you could use less schooling, actually.

Your cartoon just parrots silly, tired tropes and throws a few stereotypical jokes in. For example, it doesn't even get the definition of communism correct, since communism is a stateless, classless society. There is no state to do any taking or giving under communism.
