I got my dna results too and i have a small percentage of Nigerian in me as well. My dna reports mostly Cameroon and Benin/Toga. Then Mali and a "hunter, gatherer, nomadic" type of tribe.

I thought about putting a X on my shyt before I would just pick a random african name. But at the end of the day like Marlo said my name is my name. People that know me call me by my first or nickname anyway

I feel ya. And by the time we get old enough to gain consciousness of this, most of our elders have died; the ones who can provide knowledge and insight into our family history - great granddad/grandma etc

Well my grand father wasn't Black and I was given his last name so it makes sense.

I think my name in general has provided some privilege, in addition to the skin tone. I can't complain.

I agree with you 1000%. I felt all types of ways when i first saw my results. What happened to our ancestors became more real to me and it f*cking hurt. But i also felt some type of closure because i could finally have some clue of where my people came from.

White folks did a dirty dirty thing to us. Low...bottom of the barrel. Inhumane. Etc.

My Dad is an Ewe and my last name is from Ghana. Very unique. Everyone with it Im immediately related to. The Ewe people acknowledge and feel guilty in their participation in the slave trade to the extent that they have made the acestors of slaves to be dieties as well.

I understand why some would want to change their name to an African one once they find out their results. I also, dont think AAs should be ashamed of being descendent of slaves. The fact that you exist despite all the slaves that died by violence and sickness, etc and for your line to have survived to make you is something truly amazing.

Nothing
I wonder what would have happened if slaves were allowed to keep their African names, would the tribalism that exists in Africa also exist here in the US among Afro Americans? Because in Africa your name is used to identify what tribe or ethnic group you come from.
