U of M kicker receives death threats

(NEWSCHANNEL 3) – The University of Michigan’s kicker, Blake O’Neill is receiving death threats for his dropped ball in Saturday’s last second loss to rival Michigan State.
The ugly downside to incredible rivalry games like the one on Saturday is that there is always a small portion of the losing fan base that just does not deal well with defeat. Now, thanks to social media and online message boards, these fans now have a forum to express their displeasure.
Shortly after the botched punt attempt led to a game winning touchdown on Saturday a number of fans crossed a line with their comments.
The tweets Newschannel 3 put on air are fairly benign, but others not so much, including one from someone who suggested that O’Neill, “jump off a cliff into a pool of spikes and cyanide.”
There were also tweets from people threatening to kill O’Neill, or suggesting that he kill himself instead.
Michigan’s Athletic Director Jim Hackett was not at all happy about the situation. He released an open letter to Wolverine fans that said in part;
“Today I awake to the shocking reality that our community, who care so much about this program, would send hurtful, spiteful and vicious comments to one of our students. To be clear, such comments come from a small minority, none of whom are reflective of our institution.”
Hackett also asked; “that our community not lose this game twice by condoning thoughtless comments.”
