Friend who is broke and has no computer skills
Saying he is going to get into IT and retire in 5 years
When he says this I look at the nygga like what :gucci:
I don't see how u can with no experience magically get into a computer field that will set you up to retire in 5 yrs :mjlol:
I ain't know how to respond

I usually support them if the goal is a positive one and would only help them.

The goal may seem lofty but to your friend, that goal may be his motivating driver. Sure he may not be able to retire in 5 years, but will his life be better overall? More than likely.

Ask questions til they realize they're crazy or that they actually have to do some work

that's a good friend to have imo. at least he's setting his sights on something more. i'd flesh out the steps for that to happen. he'll snap out of it once he's actually in IT, but the victory is that he's in IT now. the goal hasn't changed, just the parameters around it. so long as he keeps that as the foundation and applies discipline, he should find himself a lot further along than the current goal that he (and you) are reducing the potential to.

I would say go for it. You never know. I once told my friend goals and he looked at me funny and said, get a real job. Right now I am doing exactly what I said I would do, and I know he is embarrassed that he was so negative.

No matter how outlandish someones goals seem, keep it to your thoughts to yourself....unless he starts asking for money or moaning to you about it, that is.

What I always do is try to avoid questioning the goal…instead I focus on the steps to get there.

Like, “Oh shyt, that’s wassup. Tons of respect for that. I know the takes a ton of work, putting in like 70 hours a week to learn while also doing your main job. You need what, $3M a year to retire these days? You must have a really ambitious work schedule to get to $600K in savings a year. That’s wassup breh.”

The average person can’t do math or plan for shyt, so u gotta lay it out for ‘em a little bit.

I'll never tell anyone they can't accomplish something reasonable.

Using the op as an example, I wouldn't tell them they can't do it. Just let them know shyt ain't easy and takes work. It's possible but are you willing to go get it instead of it being handed to you.
