How does Drake get credit for "making hit records" when he doesn't write or produce?

Not a Drake stan but he wasn't the first and not going to be the last. I think it is an issue because he's at the top of the commercial scene. I mean I think to further judge we need to see what he has wrote and didn't write to further examine. This also sets a precedence because now new rappers can say well Drake don't write so I don't its just a bad look overall. But we still need to know what he penned and what he didn't to evaluate his career as a hip hop head.

Me too

But you do realize that there are people that compare and rank Drake in the same context as Ghostface? And if conversations like that never occurred NONE of this would be an issue here?

You really care about that many peoples opinions?

I mean it's a fun to debate and discussion. But it isn't the end of the world that Drake's "Mixtape" sold more copies than GhostFace 12 Reasons pt1 and 2 this year.

Hip hop ain't going no where breh. Lyricist may not get rich, but neither did most famous painters.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
I don't agree with this stance.
Drake having ghost writers does not mean the vast majority of currently popular rappers are engaging in ghost writing .

All of his peers as far as I know, write their own songs and lyrics.
J. Cole takes pride in producing his records from top to bottom (not all of them but most of them..)
Kendrick Lamar takes pride in having an active hand driving the directions of his songs, even though he
isn't well versed in theory like Terrace martin or Thundercat, he's still a word smith and comes up
with the concepts and such.
Meek Mill, Wale, Lupe, B.o.B. and others all stress or have stressed that these are their lyrics
and by extension their songs.

And on much smaller scale projects dudes like Oddisee, Hopsin, Tech N9ne etc.
Handle the vast majority of the song writing duties and in Oddisee or Hopsin's case they handle
production as well !

Drake's ghost writing exposure might set a new precedent but as of right now, it's not a normal
thing at all and I think you'd agree on that.

This is why I don't get other rappers not speaking out. Fans accept it as the norm and some will assume everyone does it. I would have a problem with that as an MC. It las would make me feel some type of way that one of the mainstream face of the genre is a fraud. Casual rap music fans and general outsiders will assume most rappers don't even write their own music and in the end the music loses artistic integrity. shyt is sad.

Who is the person who decides which tracks to put on the album. Who is the person who fleshes out a reference track into a full song? Who says "Yes" and "No". It ain't Quentin Miller. Who is it? 40? If it's ain't 40, it's Drake.

Drake takes songs and turns them into hits.

I understand...Everyone that isn't speaking out has either used reference tracks themselves, got paid to ghostwrite for other artists or is in a position where they depend on political connections to feed their families..

My brother.. We all log into a HIP HOP site to discuss and debate peoples opinions on hip hop related topics...Did you take a wrong turn and get lost somewhere?

:dahell:

If you don't really care, why are YOU here?

:francis:

You didn't read my post
I just said it was fun to discuss and debate.

I'm not even sure what we're arguing about anymore. My point was Drake having writers is ok with me because I take his music by face value. It's fukking background music for me in the gym or car.

Speaking of Ghostface some people say Superb wrote on Supreme Clientele:yeshrug:

"Some people" is Superb, and he's a convicted child molester that made the claim with zero proof. Why this keeps getting mentioned in 2015....I have no idea.

It's like saying "Jungle wrote 'Illmatic'" with zero proof, then the rumor is still around 10 years later. How? Why? :dwillhuh:

:whoa: Hold I'm not saying its true or not I'm just saying the speculation been in the air. I doubt if it is I believe Subperb probably was in the studio maybe he contributed a few lines or ideas I don't think he penned it at all. But what about ODB? RIP but he didn't write his first album either, at first they was saying he freestyled the entire album:childplease: Later it was revealed it was old RZA and GZA lyrics.

Tony Yayo brought that shyt up too. What does it matter that Superb is a child molester? How is that relevant? Wu members and affiliates aren't angels breh. Ghost didn't deny it he said he gave him lines, maybe a verse but could never write an album of his that's what he said. Ghost is still in my top 10...

Who said Jungle wrote Illmatic what the fukk dude was like 14-15 when Illmatic was being written :wtf:

If Drake can't pen simple rhymes you think he got say on what's appearing on his album? :heh:

10 years from now people will care on The Coli (or whatever version is around in 2025) because that's sorta the point of communities like this.. To discuss the culture in a nuanced below the surface way..

But if your point is the American masses wont care than you're right... 90% of this country still thinks Michael Jackson invented the moon walk...

I agree partially...the "it'll be discussed in a nuanced below the surface way in the future" part...cause I don't think we're getting that now...we got people who are either deliberately suspending the part of the brain that would allow this to be a nuanced, realistic discussion...or who are flat out unable to at the moment for whatever reason...10 years from now, I don't think we're still playing the "drake had parts of some of his songs written by another person...so he's 100% a fraudulent, talentless actor who has never wrote anything, gets credit for nothing, and will never be respected as a rapper ever" game...i've been a member of hip hop's commenting class long enough to see how even attitudes and the tone of conversations change for acts who were previously the big bad evil mainstream culture killing villians of the day evolve over time into something more measured and less cartoonish...I'll always remember how Hot Boy Era Cash Money and later Dipset were public enemy #1 back when i first joined SOHH, they were destroying the culture...now we get "400 Degreez/Dipolmatic Immunity are classic" threads a couple times a year...

If this thing with Drake hadn't come up, I think we could have an actual nuanced conversation about DOC writing for Snoop on Doggystyle or 50 writing for LL during his trackmaster days...we're not gonna get that with Drake at the height of his heel-dom without the theatrics

THIS is what I don't get. :mindblown:

Writers/Producers don't get the credit they deserve... but that's neither hear not there. The fact that Drake gets a pass because he makes hit records contradicts the whole premise of him not writing his own music. SOMEONE ELSE is making the hit records. Drake just mimics someone's hits.

This isn't like R&B because a singers voice can change the whole make up of a song. Rap is different. Lyrics and hook instrumentals. Drake doesn't have the best voice, flow or delivery. In fact he borrows flows depending on what record he jumps on. So how does one get credit for "making hit hit records" :dahell:

Lauren Hill caught back lash because it came out she didn't write/produce her debut record. She was never the same after that. I know I'm beating a dead horse but gotdam the ignorance is so blatant its hard not to go :wtf:

Hes making it happen
