Gears 1 changed the game with a lot of its cover mechanics, it was really unlike anything else when it came out.
Personally what I liked most about it was how it didn't hold your hand at all in multiplayer. One life and you're out for the round, no aim assist, no perks, no special weapon drops. shyt was brutal and unforgiving especially to new players but games tend to be more accessible nowadays.
Having said all that it had a shytton of glitches and Host shotgun was ridiculously unfair. I like playing it to this day based on the memories I have of it back in 06 but I can understand why a reviewer wouldn't like it in this era.
And if we're being totally honest, it shouldn't matter what decimal score some blogger gives a game you like.
