Just a correction: these Generals are civilians now. They are retired. They would also have to be confirmed by the Senate, which are elected by the people.

This isn't exactly a junta here. It deserves scrutiny for sure but let's not get out of hand.

Mattis would need special consideration for that position as he's not been retired for the required amount of years. I don't doubt he'll get it as rules don't seem to apply to these people. 10 U.S. Code § 113 says: "A person may not be appointed as Secretary of Defense within seven years after relief from active duty as a commissioned officer of a regular component of an armed force."

Flynn shouldn't be considered for anything, though.

I'm not arguing against what you posted. I was merely commenting that Mattis is a civilian. He had no active command. The Senate debating and giving him a waiver is still civilian control of the armed forces and appointees. There is no junta scenario going on here.

Mattis also happens to be the most qualified person Trump has nominated so far, especially for that cabinet position.
