Juwan Howard, Kevin Garnett & Shaq's contracts in the 90s are the reason for the maximum salaries.......also didn't hurt that having Bird rights allowed owners to really go ham....shyt would have gotten ugly.
It's crazy that contracts have really been stagnant since 99.....Everyone's making a big deal about the Lakers offering a max of 4 years 95 million like they weren't getting like Kev didn't get 6 for 126 back in 97. shyt should be way higher for melo, especially adjusting for inflation.
This is key right here. Jordan's salary was bigger than the salary cap itself his last two years in CHI.
All they had to do is keep the Bird rights how they were and cap the salaries for guys changing teams. That's the perfect fix. However teams were more interested in just saving money and thusly they have thrust us into the "team up" era.
Their bad.People always bring up baseball like they don't day 162 games.
What's that gotta do with max individual contracts?
With a salary cap, max contracts are needed so the non superstars don't get left with peanuts.
First of so what? You get what you are worth. This idea that we should limit what the best can get so that lesser players can cake more is stupid and it's also the reason why the owners keep bending the PA over...because lesser players aka the majority ride with that line of thinking. That said it's not necessarily true. If you let teams sign their own guys back for whatever they want (like they did in the 90's) this is not an issue. The issue comes down to the owners being cheap.
