Give teams one super max slot that allows a player to earn an uncapped salary that will only count against the cap as a regular max. Make it so each team can only sign one player at a time to the deal. So if Lebron is signed to one, no other Heat player can get the deal til Lebron's deal expires. That's the closest thing to true free market value for top tier NBA players. And it may help the competitive balance of the league.
Example: Lebron signs a 5 year/$250 mil deal. It counts against the Heat's cap as Lebron's regular max, and he gets twice as much. That way Lebron gets what he's truly worth, and the other players won't be left with pennies.
What if the bottom of the league is competing for mid level talent and give that contract to Joe Johnson?
