:what: do you want to re-read that post again? What choice did you have in your last name

You have control in changing it

It's really hard to change your last name. I mean emotionally and psychologically.
A lot of us probably should tho.

People ask me when i have a son if i'm going to name him after me quite often. Part of me thinks that would be nice but I want an african rooted last name.

Most of us don't know which part of Africa we were from before we were brought over here.

Like moving a plant to a new garden, we have no roots.

I for one, don't know my heritage or what languages my family spoke. The connection to my African culture is essentially destroyed, save for the spirit, blood and skin itself, the deepest most intrinsic parts of my African bodies being.

But the culture, mentality, traditions, memes, values, were specifically targeted and eradicated by slavery. So we come here a blank slate.

Both a blessing and a curse. Be very careful what you write on this blank slate.

Names, have/had meaning. Spiritual meaning. A name was your parents wish for your life. I don't think names have such a deep meaning in the Western World today.

Perhaps not.
But why do you suppose so many people take on western (white) names?

It doesn't seem to happen the other way around.

Even in areas where whites migrate where they are the minorities.

Do Americans who move to India have children and name them Rashmi?

Don't know about you. But I'm glad my name isn't jose or Jesus. Lol.

And my last name is Spanish because of the spaniards.

I think name and language are both extremely important to preserving ones culture and identity, if they weren't important, Black people would know what our original names, languages and cultures were instead of them literally being erased and beaten out of us.

It just depends. In my family everybody's named after each other. Even the girls. But I have noticed that some of my cousins have started this aglo name thing.

Obviously not. Cause a name is something your given and take with you.

A name is also something you make for yourself.

My full name is Scottish. First, Middle and Last. I have a hard time pronouncing it clearly and actually wouldn't mind changing my first and last name.

It wouldn't even feel like betraying my family. I have a thing about making things "my own."
