I mean its :mindblown: Back in the day, an artist dropped a hit single and their shyt came out the next month tops. Now, artist have a good single and don't even have release date in sight. Perfect example would be French Montana and Juicy J. These two had the biggest rap songs last year and failed to capitalize on it. My theory is since companies know that no one outside drake, wayne, jay, and ye are going gold let alone plat, they will put no effort into marketing or promoting an album. They probably recoup from these 360 deals

The more the flop artist flops, the more the cream of the crop artist can rise to the top; like Adele or even a Kendrick Lamar:obama:

How do you sell a product that is so easily available for free??

It's a different era out here, only dudes with a dedicated fanbase are moving anything. Look at K. Dot dude dropped one of the dopest albums in a while with multiple songs on the radio and backed by Dre/Interscope...yet he's struggling to reach a mil (if he hasn't already).

You gotta have a connection to the audience, so while rapper like French and Ross might get a lot of spins...they wont move of units because they make disposable music.

i bought that album because it was good not because of nothing else.

You underestimate power of influence

Yea u thought the music was good

But u must remember, with music comes an image

In particular, the way they marketed kdot as this lyrical, savior of rap is genius

They marketed him as an underdog while still shoving him down ur throats

Your perception of someone's character can affect how u perceive their music

Kdot is that underdog ppl are willing to invest in and the labels and kdot can pat themselves on the back on a job well done

they dont give a dam about the artists, their aim is to make risk free money.

Promoting (spending money) an unproven (no prior sales track record) artist is a gamble..........the more promotion they give (the more money they spend) the bigger the gamble. They want safe bets.

Most of the people in the positions to give the green light on budgets dont know shyt about real hip hop music and dont care to know. They are basically souped up coli posters (educated people with the same personal biasis towards artists that you see on this board and probably even less knowledge on the artists) with financial resources. Now imagine having one of these Nas haters in a position where they can influence the type of promotion he will receive............or someone that doesnt understand what the roots are saying in a position to determine how much they will put into their next project. The shyt is designed to fail.

These same dudes see that singles are a consistent steady source of income for them so this is what their buisness design places a priorty on.

These dudes also see that album sales are unpredicatable (from what they think) so they treat nikkas albums like a crap roll (not putting too much money into one roll even if the odds are in their favor to hit their point, like a 6/8 point). They hedge their bets by selling the rights to peoples albums to website that u can stream the whole thing for 10 bucks a month (or free from your home computer), they half ass promote nikkas album and whatever else u can think of and if it sells Great, if it doesnt....they simply roll the dice again on something else

........
