They're often mentally "checked out" before the relationship officially ends. Though I don't think this is actually gender specific and really depends more on who's ending the relationship vs. who's more invested in trying to make it work.

What is probably more gender specific is women having a lot more social leeway with being "emotional", which is pretty damn handy when dealing with something as emotional as a break up.
