I don't know your particular circumstances, but academia is incredibly difficult to break into these days. Unless your doing your ph.d at a top 20 university in the world or are a "rockstar" in your field, you'll have a toughi time getting a tenure track position. Sessional lecturers (who actually do the bulk of the teaching at most North American schools) are lucky if they don't have to go on welfare in the summer.

I'm not trying to shatter your dreams or anything, I'm just saying it isn't like it was 20 years ago.

Its the job satisfaction that I'm lacking. Pay is decent (live Toronto suburb), but its not challenging. I want to make a living working with animals. If I had the means, I'd drop it all and study to become a vet; but that ship has sailed
