i learned to swim when i was real young.
i love going deep and pretending that i'm flying.

if you don't know how to swim just go into shallow water and practice.
it's a very natural activity and is an excellent way to exercise.

Its funny my mom wanted all of us to know how to swim but she can barely do it herself. I remember we used to go snorkeling by these rocks with my pops in the sea and catch "Erizos de Mar" I don't even know what its called in English but its a type of seafood. Similar to clams I guess, in a sense.

i was lucky.
i grew up in a CoOp in the Bronx that had a swimming pool but i also went to Orchard Beach in the summer.

one day me and my pops went to City Island and rented a row boat.
my pops put a life jacket on me and told me to jump in the water :dwillhuh:
we were damn near in the ocean :sadcam:

i jumped in while he smoked a Newport.
he was looking at me like :troll:

but i'll be damned if i didn't swim around that row boat like :cape:for the first minute...then i was like :dahell:...pull me back in pops.

I can't swim. In fact I'm scared of large bodies of water. :snoop: When I was little I had two experiences where I almost drowned in my aunt's pool in her backyard (had to have my cousin come and save me ) so I always had that fear in the back of my head which hindered me from learning. :wow: I'm good in the shallow parts of the pool these days but as far as the deep end of pools where I can't stand up and have my head still above water I need to hold onto the side of the pool. :snoop:

EDIT: Luckily I'm a human and not a fish so I don't have to worry about this. :smugbiden:

i think when it come to black folks, our ability to swim is almost directly correlated with poverty and location. a lot of us just didn't grow up in areas where we have easy access to pools. you go to the burbs, and every back yard has a pool. in the inner city, hey, that's just not the case. im glad my parents took to me the ymca at an early age for swimming lessons, i used those skills to save a buddy that was light weight drowning. basically used me as a life raft and almost suffocated me as well, but yeah  swimming isn't even hard once you learn to float, i urge all y'all to learn if you haven't.

I was gonna say the same thing, actually. When you live in the city, you'd be hard pressed to find a pool! I never grew up in a neighborhood with a pool...on the few occasions that I did go to the pool would be in the summertime, when I spent time at my BFF's house and we'd walk to the public pool...and the beach wasn't accessible.

I remember when I was growing up we always used to kick it with the lifeguard in the summer, during the swimming pool days. And my friend almost fukked this one lady lifeguard. She was a peado though cause my friend was like 12 and she was 18! :what: :wtf:

On a trip to jamaica when i was 5, i swam like a mile off shore in my floaties. Like 5 lifeguards had to come after me i wasnt afraid though :manny: Moms forced me to take swimming lessons at the Y after we got back. By 7 I was in the adult class :wow: I quit soon after because there was nothing more to learn, i didnt want to join a sport and being the only nikka that could swim was lonely. Looking back it was a mistake.
