What is the best mouthwash and toothpaste for having periodontal disease?
I decided to share my entire situation so you could come up with the best decision for your situation. Plus I want to see if anybody else has been experiencing these similar things with the dentists lately. Be prepared, because this is extra long.
This is what I use: Btw, none of these products were recommended by my dentist. I use CHEWTAB (toothpaste tablets) made with this ingredient called Xylitol, made by a company named WELDENTAL. And I use Spry Mouth Wash (Alcohol Free), also made with the ingredient Xylitol. But I start off first using my Water Flosser Waterpik, with a Waterpik Tip attachment. This Waterpik Tip attachment has a little pod connected, where you place a WELTAB Pro Tablet inside, also made with Xylitol, and also made by WELDENTAL. These Waterpik Tips are compatible with most Water Flossers. Btw, the Spry Mouth Wash isn't made by WELDENTAL, but it can be purchased on the their website weldental.com. But all three of these products can be purchased on Amazon as well. So in a nut shell, I use the Water Flosser Waterpik tip attachment, containing a WELTAB Pro Tablet, then I brush with a CHEWTAB, then I rinse with SPRY Mouth Wash. I do this in the morning, then again 11 hours later.
Background. I just started using these products in October 2021, So the jury is still out on them. Before that, I hadn't been to my regular dentist since April 2021, which was six months earlier. That was because after a year and a half of seeing my regular dentist, and after she did my periodontal maintenance or regular cleaning, she out of nowhere decided I needed an implant (something they specialize in), even though the regular periodontal maintenances and cleanings were working just fine, and I was feeling better and better, especially since I started using my normal waterpik every morning. Then she said my insurance would cover the implants. She was right, but I knew they only covered 60 percent, and you know how expensive implants are, if they even work for me.
So after that, I missed my three or four month follow-up appointments with my regular dentist, and like I said, I didn't see a dentist until six months later in October 2021, which of course was a new dentist. And that dentist turned out to be a total nightmare. With my insurance, I don't usually walk out with no more than a $50 copay per visit. But this dentist told me my copay would be $500, because I waited too long, which suppose to had made my condition worst than usual, and they had to do this and do that, even though I wasn't having all that much pain. They had measured my gum depth at only 3-4, when I use to get 7's and 9's in the past, which would have me coming to the dentist with much more tenderness on my gums, but still leaving me with no more than a $50 copay. Anyway, my insurance covers only two periodontal maintenance treatments (periodontal maintenance is much more expensive), per calendar year at 60 percent. But most of my dentists in the past kept my copay at no more than $50 per visit by splitting my treatments up, giving me a periodontal maintenance treatment one visit, then following it up three or four months later by giving me just a regular cleaning, in which one or both of those are covered by my insurance at 100%. This worked out fine for me financially. So after rotating these treatments throughout the year, I would wound up getting two periodontal maintenance cleanings, and two regular cleanings per year. And it turned out these cleanings plus using my regular waterpik, were doing wonders for me, and only my right bottom gum would give me issues. That issue would come back about every three months, then it went to every six months. Then it got to the point I was no longer feeling any tenderness during my visits. Like I said, I was getting better and better.
Anyway, after I stormed out that dentist's office in April 2021, the ones that told me my copay would be $500, this forced me to search online for alternative treatments. That's how I came across WELDENTAL, and started using their products. I was suppose to use the Water Flosser Waterpik Tip, with the WELTAB Pro Tablet once in the morning, followed by brushing with a CHEWTAB. Then I was suppose to repeat this 11 hours later, and no earlier, giving the products time to work. This did take away my pain, and I didn't have to find another dentist immediately, although I shouldn't had waited all the way up until last month, where the pain got kinda bad again, like it hadn't in a while. Plus I should have had at least one periodontal cleaning, or at least one regular cleaning, since the time I stormed out that office. That may have gave these WELDENTAL products a better chance to penetrate my gums. Plus I wasn't always brushing with a CHEWTAB twice a day, just in the morning. And I wasn't using any mouth wash, because I hadn't gotten the Spry Mouth Wash until about two or three months after I started using these products. The Spry Mouth Wash is a little expensive, so even when I finally bought it, I still wasn't using it every day. This may have been a huge mistake too. But again. I did manage to keep away the tenderness from that right bottom gum area for up to eight months, which was again up until last month. I may have had better results if I was flossing, brushing, and mouth washing with these product 2 twice a day from the beginning like I was suppose. Then again, I don't know if doing all this with just a regular waterpik, regular tooth paste, and regular mouth wash would have worked out just as fine, as long as I was doing each routine twice a day.
But the nightmare got worst. When the pain came back last month, I did find a second new dentist, but he too told me my copay would be $500 like that dentist in October 2021 told me. Btw, I had to list this last dentist I saw in October 2021 on their new patient form. That office wasn't too far away, and I think he spoke with him. They probably play golf together. But I chose these two dentists because they both had appointments that were almost immediately available. That's becoming a read flag lately. Of course my pain was worst by now than it was back in October, but manageable. So I had to walk out of this office too. Their gum depth exam showed a few 5's and 4's, but mostly 3's and 2's. So it was only a little worst than what that dentist found in October 2021, but I still wasn't getting those 7's, 9's, and 11's like I was getting in the past, when I was having worst pain. But I did find out what was bringing up my cost during this visit. It was the Arestin gum disease treatment, which use to be optional. And they wanted to do 6 teeth. That dentist office in October went by a different name other than Arestin. But like I said, Arestin was never mandatory, and my gums weren't in that bad of shape. Just the normal periodontal maintenance with a little scrapping below the gum line would have been fine. I probably could have gotten by with just the regular cleaning as well, as long as I was doing my three routines twice daily. I think these dentist are catching on to what we're doing, and making us pay for even more things we don't need. It's almost like they're at war with us.
But the story doesn't end here. The day after I stormed out this office too, knowing they probably communicated with that other dentist I saw in October 2021, I messed up and bit down too hard on that right bottom gum that was tender, and the pain got worst that day. So I tried to make an appoint the next day, agreeing to pay this new dentist a $500 copay, expecting them to take me in immediately because of the pain, but they gave me an appointment that wasn't available until almost two months. This was unheard of, especially when I was just there the other day. So when I talked to the manager, who was all friendly with me when I first met him, he just kept repeating that same 2 month later appointment date, like he was a robot. He didn't even suggest what I could take for the pain. I had to hang up on him. Btw, both of these dentists have an all Black staff, but this is what I'm getting...smh. I got so desperate I tried to make an appointment with my old regular hygienist, the one that wanted to suddenly do the implant, but they were closed for the day. Although I was beginning to feel a little tension with her during my last visit, again I was desperate. And since I ducked them for a year, the tension would have probably been even worst. That's how they are down here. Btw, their office was all Black too. Am I seeing a trend here.
So I had to wound up making an appointed with that first dentist office I walked out on in October 2021. When I called, the receptionist was acting a little passive aggressive...she was probably there when I stormed out that day. Like what do they expect from people, after hearing a 35 to 50 dollar copay, then hearing 500 dollars. But you suppose to still be the problem. Anyway, she didn't have an appointment until a week later, and she started telling me I should have stayed that day. At least she wasn't talking about two months. And at least she did suggest Ibuprofen for the pain. I just stayed away from chewing too hard on that side for the rest of that day, and the pain was down by about 70% the next day. So I was able to tolerate the less severe pain for a week. But I do think they would have taken me sooner if I made noise, but then again, I don't know. But their staff is a lot more kinder than that place I went to the day before, who offered me no advice for my pain, but I still don't trust them all the way. I do remember they came down $150 less that day in October 2021, but that was still too high compared to $35 to $50. But I wounded up paying them around $350, and they did my periodontal maintenance, and gave me all that Arestin, which I still don't think I needed, plus it probably didn't help all that much. They never did tell me what to do if the pain came back, which wasn't too cool, although the hygienist was nice. So far the pain has gotten less and less, but I think most of that is because I'm doing these three routines daily, combined with the periodontal maintenance they did. If the pain is still gone when I go back in six months, which I hope it is, believe me, and they start talking about charging me all that money, and giving me all that Arestin, I'm walking out again. But this time, I won't wait this long to find a new dentist, or until the pain comes back. Tbh, I was really hoping these WELDENTAL products would rid me of having to continue periodontal maintenance treatment altogether. That's what these products are design to do. Like I said, the jury is still out on them.
Read up on WELDENTAL when you get a chance. I'd like to hear others experiences with these products.
