I've lived all over the North East from NYC to Rhode Island but mostly in NYS. Bringing something to "contribute" would be considered an insult to the host, taken as an insinuation that they are not providing adequate nom noms. This is another way that a fight could get set off along with sharing a plate.

I don't think you're bring serious. There is no way your family is charging you by the plate. That's wild. They are having a cookout at work today and it's literally free. And they will ask you to take the extra food with you.

There are just some things I will never understand about the north east.

In 30+ years of living in the south, every single cookout I’ve been to was free. Every one. And we have them all the time. I just grilled a bunch of food for memorial day, not even a cookout, and sent a message out to a few people and told them they could stop by and pick something up just because. Brisket, jerk chicken, smoked wings, burgers, hot dogs and shrimp… and some vegetables on skewers. The grilled snapper was just for me though.

That’s just we do down here I guess. I don’t expect anyone to pay anything. Just get good food and laugh a little bit.

My grandma(rip) used to make a 7 layer salad for cookouts. People tore that shyt up.
Wasn't healthy at all though. I don't remember the recipe though
but it looked something like this. she had a reputation for not being the best cook though. so maybe thats why i don't see people bringing it back.

He lying. My extended family just had a memorial cookout and fed the whole block. If you wanna put something on it, that's cool or whatever, but ain't nobody charging.

I have seen events that look like cookouts, but its actually just a lady who make plates doing it outside in the summertime, so yes, you will pay. The block I grew up on be having whole crab boils and Patron n shyt. #moneymakingmanhattan
