How the hell did the elders come up with musical compositions like this?

Most of the greats learned from Church or Family or Both. Rarely school
  • Mayfield is from a Gospel Family.
  • Pendergrass - Church
  • Stevie - Church
  • Prince - Parents were musicians
  • Miles - Family/Friends of family
  • James Brown - Church
  • Isaac Hayes - Church
  • Aretha - Parents are musicians + church
  • Donny Hathaway - Church (but later School)
  • MJ - parents were musicians
  • Marvin - Church
School (tax dollars)
  • Coltrane
  • Hendrix
Aside from changing tastes in music, there's been big changes in the community.

And think about what instruments they TYPICALLY have in schools - Strings, Brass, Woodwinds, Bass Drums - stuff in orchestras.

Where as the stuff used most often in popular music - guitars, drums, pianos - rare for a school to have that.

Honestly they should be teaching Fruity Loops to these 8th graders instead of clarinets.

It was a joke!
I hear you. I don't wanna be THAT parent either. Just a shame. Especially considering his crew is mostly talentless MFers who would rather play wack sports n Fortnite all day :snoop:
I can't speak on parenting but as a former child, yeah, I wouldn't outright push it but anything, it could even be coding (there's plenty of school/kid+parent coding events out there), is way better than having "fun" on a screen all your life :skip:

Church was like the AAU of the music industry. Every Sunday you are putting reps in front of an audience. You learn showmanship and how to improvise on the fly. That list can be sooooo much longer.

Yeah, I was definitely cutting it short.

Producing, Rapping and singing definitely democratized making music. But honing one's craft, performing, getting valuable feedback from the audience...

If the average Black kids wanted to be Curtis, good luck. If the average parent wanted to raise the next Curtis, it would be very expensive.

As has been said before, We're losing recipes.

They were inspired by love. Where as this generation is inspired by fear, anger, animosity, and materialism. There's no soul to our music anymore because we became souless as a people.

When Hendrix go to school for music? It’s said he learned licks from others as a teen and would play along for hours to Muddy Waters records.

Kids need to learn at-least piano or keyboard to grasp music theory to transition that to a DAW
