How? Pretty much EVERYTHING about this songs screams "mid-aughts pop rap hit".... it's a single from prime-popularity 50 Cent...damn near a one-to-one retread of one of his previous hits (Magic Stick)...produced by Scott Storch, the DJ Mustard of '04-'05,...the piano melody at the beginning of the video immediately takes me back when songs like this and Lean Back were all over the radio to the point where they're almost indistinguishable like the random mustard tracks today....all parties involved could have prolly made this song in their sleep and woke up assured it was a guaranteed hit

Hold up bruh Scott Storch is more versatile and talented than Dj Mustard.

It really wasn't…50's momentum at that time was comic book villain status, remember him on XXL with a damn crossbow? He was unstoppable, and untouchable more or less, hilarious in hindsight 50 Cent can definitely be listed as a victim of the recession, and 2005 was his last banner year, but it was so over the top, like the subprime mortgages and home buying, people saw the downfall coming.

But, back to 'Candy Shop', it was just there and the album, and his beef with Game, Jada, Nas, Fat Joe, had everyone on full attention, it would be shown in time, 2 years later that the formula hadn't changed, but the impact did. He got away with a lot, inflated success based on timing. My favorite 50 album tho is 'The Massacre', and while this song was formulaic as it gets, I remember I liked it enough to listen to, esp on drunken nights with this girl from that time period. 'Disco Inferno' was the real travesty from that album.

I truly believe that Candy Shop would have been a lot better received by nerd fans (and by nerd fans I mean anyone who posts on a hip hop forum) had they stumbled upon it over the course of the album instead of it being sold to them as the lead single. Up until that point 50 had kinda made his name on being the hip hop alpha male super thug type and I think in the midst of all that "beef" some were hoping the lead single from his next album would have came a little harder.

But when you chop it down and take that song for what it is I really don't see why so many have a problem with it. That's a hot fukkin track. That beat is smooth as fukk and 50's flow is country crock butter. Yea it had a sing-along chorus but it's not like it was a poppy bubblegum radio jam. The track still had balls.

50 coulda put out any of them flopped singles from 2011-2014 back in 05 and it wouldve been a instant hit.. he was at the point Drakes at now where he can put out anything and itd be a hit.. unfortunately he chose to go the pop route and it didnt turn out good for him in the long run

Exactly.. that was 50 season but he abused his powers. He was at a higher level than Drake is at now, but Drake hasn't abused his powers by making such shytty music. You could argue this song was pretty much the beginning of 50's downfall.

Yeah, the Wolfman latently homoerotic cover of 'The Massacre' was classic for all the wrong reasons, but like I said totally aligned with where 50's ego was (and probably still is) at the time, the difference is everyone ws with him back then from the brass at Interscope, to the streets, to the suburbs.

I'll agree 'Beg For Mercy;', while I have a nostalgic and genuine appreciation for that album, aside from maybe 5 tracks, the production is cheap and dated, and Banks was phoning it in half the time, the same way he did on his solo though that turned out much better. Buck was out of place on a lot of the production too, while his bars were dope, he felt out of place sometimes on those budget ass beats.

Oh, and how anyone could like his debut better then 'The Massacre' is beyond me, Massacre is 50 at his best, his most confident, and most raw, aside from maybe 3-4 tracks, which aren't all garbage, just pop, it's a street album through and through.

really? seems a lil early :ehh:

and yo massacre had quality shyt on it, despite the garbage

yep. "beg for mercy" was blah, and the other squads on the east coast were putting that album to shame.

and low-key, he was losing steam on GRODT.

as for massacre, i'd say it was half quality/half garbage. and the quality tracks werent even all that except like 1 or 2 joints.

dog. the fact that the song was called "candy shop" alone disqualifies it from receiving any type of positive response. not to mention it was on the heels of a song called DISCO INFERNO. the x-rated video couldnt even save that one.

and 50 already laid down a trail of wannabe jarule singles for like 2 years leading up to this atrocity.
