How washed do you remember people viewing Dr Dre prior to 2001?

The Aftermath compilation was not a Dre album and was not marketed as a Dre album :unimpressed:

Looking back it's a nonsensical release. You a solo Dre track. One track featuring Nas, KRS and B-Real. RBX and King Tee solos which, all due respect, ain't moving any records. Rest of it was tracks from a bunch of no names that was never heard from again. They promoted one single, the Dre track. It's a miracle that shyt sold as much as it did.

But Dre name still carried weight. The narrative that Eminem saved him is oversimplification. All the pre-release hype for that album was because of Dre's involvement. That was the only industry co-sign that would have worked and made the public take Em serious off the bat. Regardless of a couple underwhelming projects Dre was still an icon and his name still carried weight. Eminem had to deliver, and he did, and that benefited Dre in a major way. But Dre involvement was the only reason the album had a chance to succeed in the first place.

you're right except this.

They promoted 2 singles

This was the second single

True should have been clearer, I meant really promoted and pushed by the label. I remember seeing the Been There Done That music video all the time and getting some radio play. I never even saw the East Coast West Coast Killaz video until years later and don't remember hearing it on the radio, and that was an era when I watched the video shows and listened to the radio all the time.

Same breh...I was 13 when 2001 dropped and the idea of a rapper being being around the age of my parents seemed :scust:

Got me feeling :flabbynsick:. I was already on campus when 2001 dropped. Cats didn't think Dre was washed, just a lot of questions/up in there air shyt about how his sound was going to be. That one aftermath project was an L/plus the firm shyt was kind of weak but he still had some heat like been there/done that, Phone Tap. He basically got a pass for that because Em gave him a new wave to quarterback with like what he had with Snoop. Seeing that run in real time was incredible.

Sidenote, the Chronic 2001 instrumentals shut shyt down. Me and my homie's dormroom was defacto recording spot for cats getting the rhymes off that couldn't get in a studio due to budget and etc:mjlol:.

What made it worse he dropped that dr dre after math in November of 96, but people here on the west coast was still moaning Pac loss and nothing else matter at the time..

Then Big Death and his 2nd album took over 97 as well as Wu tang forever

I attended the Up In Smoke Tour at eight years old

Worcester, Mass - 1st night of two nights and this is what was used for the tour DVD

So I can relive the greatest show I’ve seen whenever I want :blessed:

Inevitably as an adult I’d become the first rapper from Boston to film (multiple) music videos in Compton and the first rapper to record a Dr. Dre tribute song while he is alive :obama:

My dad took me, my sister and her high school boyfriend also went. They were a few rows ahead of us and my dad had me on his shoulders for most of the night. My dad was 50 years old then and this was the only interest I ever shared with my father that he was impressed be. He was thoroughly impressed by the stage show of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg, how precise they sounded on the mic .. the skull coming down and talking to the crowd. He found humor in Ice Cube’s “fukk You, Ice Cube” crowd work song and he wasn’t impressed with Eminem - Eminem sounded rushed and out of breath

Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Ice Cube, Warren G. Xzibit

Still the best show I’ve seen to this day. Snoop was 32 years old then, now I am that :obama:
