In the context of America, yeah.

When you really think about if folks are so staunchly in their non-belief there wouldn’t be this need to discover or try and over evaluate what their reason or meaning in life is

Again, not to say true atheists etc don’t exist but rarely do I come across the real deal, usually folks just chirping “I’m spiritual”
Believing in God with no proof is on the same level as a Man believing he’s a Woman

I reached my non-belief by exploring the meaning of life and religion. Grew up Christian Protestant, there are multiple denominations my family follow. Been to a couple of Catholic schools, taught by nuns or priests. Grew up into a Jewish burb for most of my life. My nikkas and uncles are wannabe Black muslim militants. Got into western philosophy in college, discovered deism. I soon realized deism was religion for people who are afraid to ask too many questions about god and religion.

This is a confusing take.

Non-believers are still human, and many still wish to derive meaning or value from their life. For the non-believers that came from religious upbringings, they probably built their entire worldview, from their morality system (what is right and wrong and why), to the their way of coping with existentialism and mortality, around their religion. But once the religion was gone, there would for many still exist a need to fill the void left with an alternative worldview that helps them deal with human anxieties and develop a set of principles that guide people from day to day in a social system. These things help people find fulfillment and purpose that go beyond simply existing.

I never deny them their humanity

Grew up Christian.

Wouldn’t say I’m Christian anymore and I don’t go to church. I believe that there is a God or higher power and pray daily

“I contend that we are both atheists. I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
― Stephen Roberts
I contend that we're both Capitalists. I just reject one more, or a few more iterations of Marxism/Communism than you do.

I contend that we're both Amish. I just reject a few more technological devices that mankind has invented than you do.

I contend that we're both vegans. I just reject a few more animal products than you do.

everything is meaningless, so I imbue it all with meaning. I am my own God. I can do what I want with purpose, with a nihilistic optimism. In my mind, there is no good and bad. It is just what is.

Proud atheist, and I'll stand on it.

I grew up hardcore Baptist-- that's the predominant religion amongst Black folk in South Central LA.

I used to believe atheists were Devil Worshippers :mjlol:

Then, I learned a lot more, asked a whole lot of questions that couldn't be answered, and fell out of the religion. I used to debate religion, on both sides. These days, I don't care what people believe, as long as they leave me the fukk out of it and are not actively harming anyone else, like Muslims do to gays in the middle east.

Basically, religion doesn't concern me and I don't think about it in my day-to-day life anymore.

I will agree that there is some utility in the community aspect of religion. People can come together for a good cause based on their belief system, and overall, I think that's a societal good. The Ten Commandments are generally good pieces of advice (with a few exceptions) and I don't see any problem with, say, a Christian living a charitable life seeking peace amongst their community and doing good deeds.

I consider myself spiritual in the sense that I believe in a force outside of myself but rather attach that to an incorporal entity that has never been proven outside of man, and apply natural abilities to this incorporal being, I attach my spiritual beliefs to my ancestors and nature.

I differentiate this from religion as I define religion as beliefs attached to ideas that are typically associated with a narrative that people today accept as historical but I can't find the appropriate evidence that any of these religious narratives are historical and find that nearly all these narratives are myths. Nothing wrong with a myth as myths were utilized in antiquity as tools to teach lessons but as the missionaries sought power and resources forced these myths into historical fact, for the sake of control and power.
