How would you spend $1000 monthly?

I understand you can't explain everything about the bible, does it not sound fishy to you that a God that supposedly created the earth and everything in it asks for you to give him 10% of the human currency that you work for? Why would an all powerful god ask for money? Money would logically mean nothing to him

It's not the money.....it's what can be done with the money. We don't barter in the developed world much......we use money to buy things we need. People who are hungry need food which can be bought. Somebody who for some unfortunate circumstance doesn't have insurance and needs help financially with hospital bills need money. Some single parent who suddenly had a flat tire on their way to work and don't have the money to get it fixed need help. This is what churches around the world do, and more. God uses people to show that He does exist, because we are made in His image. People who believe in God represent Him on earth, because we are made in His image.

Genesis 1:27
So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21

20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making His appeal through us; we [as Christ’s representatives] plead with you on behalf of Christ to be reconciled to God.
21 He made Christ who knew no sin to [judicially] be sin on our behalf, so that in Him we would become the righteousness of God [that is, we would be made acceptable to Him and placed in a right relationship with Him by His gracious lovingkindness].

Wouldn't it make more sense to give the money directly to those charities or funds that provide those services instead of throwing it in the collection plate :patrice:

That's all a part of it....We can do that if we want. But God still expects us to support the focus of His Church, which is spreading the message of Jesus Christ to the world. That starts with your local church that is teaching from the Bible and doing mission work around the local community. Your tithe (God's 10%) should go there.

So true.

I cant criticize donating to charity though. Ive worked with city programs for the arts with kids. Was the assistant director of a city government funded urban renewal initiative doing murals in Pittsburgh. So i appreciate where that sentiment is coming from even though i came to the conclusion that you dont need to worship a god or a fictional book to do good work for the world.

You act as if these charity organizations are not known to have people who take money from the organization and use it for things other than what they say they will use it for. (LiveStrong...remember that?)

Yes there are shady people out there everywhere, but God doesn't hold that against us for doing our part. He sees our heart and judges accordingly. In the end the person doing the dirt will have to answer for that.

Can you be a good person without being involved in the church?

Let me just give you the words Jesus spoke

Mark 10:17-31
The Rich and the Kingdom of God

17As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

18Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone.

19You know the commandments:You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.

20“Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.

22At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!

24The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!

25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.

26The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.

28Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”

29Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel

30will fail to receive a hundred times as much in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come eternal life.

31But many who are first will be last, and the last first.

i live paycheck to paycheck.
if i had an extra $1000 a month all of a sudden, i would put $600 into savings, $300 towards student loans and $100 towards saving for a vacation.

An extra $1000? I'd place $500 in savings for my future, and $300 in another savings account. I really don't spend much money, so the $200 would probably just go to a stash.
