How Xbox One became the best console of this generation - Reader’s Feature
Let’s start with the games. This Christmas will mark the third year Sony has a lack of mainstream first party games, and it’s not because they don’t see the holidays as a good time to release games, but because the likelihood of Sony’s games releasing on time is about the same as a one-legged man’s chances of winning an arse-kicking contest. I’d list the games that Sony’s delayed this generation but it’s pretty much every game. Of the games they have released I feel only Uncharted 4 has lived up to expectations
I also hold Sony responsible for No Mans Sky’s terrible time at release. If ever there was a game that should have followed the Minecraft model of being available early at a cheap price and then kept iterating and updating it over the years, Hello Games labour of love was it. But Sony pushed for it to be a £49.99 release, with all the expectations that price point brings, and now Hello Games’ name is mud in a lot of gamers’ eyes.
It’s also the case that Sony have shifted a lot of internal developers to supporting PlayStation VR. It’s a difficult choice to deride, as they are going to need games to sell the hardware (and I do hope they succeed, VR looks incredible). But it’s a choice that means if you have no interest in VR, Sony are taking your money and investing it in technology and games you'll never play
I know it’s subjective but I feel Microsoft’s release schedule is much better, with a guaranteed Forza each Christmas alongside a tent pole release like Halo and Gears. And accompanied by new IP such as Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, and ReCore. Which is taking the exact opposite approach to Sony and releasing new IP at a lower price point to entice customers, even though ReCore is not an indie title and has far more than 11 people working on it.
Next up is the quality of PS Plus against Games with Gold. Someone wrote in recently about their dissatisfaction at Sony’s selection of games arriving on the system, and I couldn’t agree more. A situation made more frustrating as Microsoft are generally hitting it out of the park at the moment. Every month you seem guaranteed a full price title (WWE 2K16 this month) and the added bonus of two Xbox 360 games. That’s four free games a month on Xbox, usually higher quality and definitely better value proposition than Sony’s string of indie titles.
Oh, yeah… Free. Backwards compatibility
