The cost, probably a total of $10,000-$15,000, didn't keep track since the experiences are priceless. The "why" is easy, because the world itself is the greatest gift we have.

I lived in Salvador, Brazil for 5 months, probably my favorite city on the planet with my favorite people with the best and most relaxing atmosphere on earth. I can't go back because I have a family here now, but I'd like to go back when I retire, it's where I want the rest of my life to happen. They have less than us, yet they are happier than we are, they are less stressed even.
The rat race isn't natural, early man worked less when he had to hunt for his food, shyt makes no sense that we work twice as hard and have less freedom than they did.

I need to travel too but I feel stuck and I keep making excuses every time I get the urge. Where did you stay when you traveled to all of these places? Hotel? Host family?

Read that my dude, do it while you can, I haven't been able to travel in years and it's slowly eating away at me. Once you get caught up in life with a career, girl and kids, you will not be able to do it.
For me, I got to travel first with some friends and was hooked. I started traveling on my own after a trip my friends and I put together fell apart, one dude changed his plans and we all lost money, so I stopped relying on others. I've stayed in hotels and hostels, and when I was living in Brazil I had my own apartment. That was honestly the best time of my life, and I sometimes regret coming back to the US, I love my family but I often feel like I do not belong here.
Just get over the fear and go some place in another state, even if it's just for the weekend. In the future, there will be the final 10 minutes of your life, what would you rather have, the excuses that prevented you from traveling or the experiences that enriched your life and made it worth living?
