Convoluted stats always look surprising because you don't see them for anyone else and don't take obvious shyt into account.
@CHICAGO treating shots inside 3 feet and outside 3 feet like they different, but treating twos and threes like they the same? How dumb is that?
So instead of mixing together twos and threes and treating them the same like this is the 1960s, here are the actual numbers for outside shooting.
I picked out a few elite perimeter players from the last twenty years who were volume scorers, as opposed to elite shooters. Here are the numbers that matter:
Lebron
39.2% on twos from 3-23 feet,
34.2% on threes. eFG% outside 3 feet is
43.0%
Iverson
38.8% on twos from 3-23 feet,
30.8% on threes. eFG% outside 3 feet is
40.4%
Wade
40.8% on twos from 3-23 feet,
28.7% on threes. eFG% outside 3 feet is
39.1%
McGrady
40.8% on twos from 3-23 feet,
34.1% on threes, eFG% outside 3 feet is
43.8%
Kobe
42.3% on twos from 3-23 feet,
32.9% on threes, eFG% outside of 3 feet is
44.2%
Rose
42.2% on twos from 3-23 feet,
29.8% on threes. eFG% outside 3 feet is
42.9%
Wizards Jordan
41.1% on twos from 3-23 feet,
24.1% on threes. eFG% outside 3 feet is
40.4%
The only reason that Lebron's overall numbers are lower from outside 3 feet is because he's smart enough to focus on threes, which are worth MORE, instead of shooting midrange twos, which are shots that are both tougher to get (because you get into the defense) AND are worth less. Shooting more midrange twos does not make you a better outside shooter if it means you're shooting fewer threes, and even though it makes your FG% go up a little, it makes your eFG% go down.
Lebron's overall impact on shooting outside of 3 feet is basically the same as Kobe, McGrady, and Rose, and substantially better than Iverson, Wade, and Wizards Jordan.
I don't have the numbers for Jordan pre-2000. My guess is that he was even less efficient from distance in the 1980s, but more efficient in the 1990s. However, the lack of threes would have kept his efficiency from being that high, because he certainly wasn't doing much better than 43-44% on midrange twos when he was only shooting 51-52% on twos overall during that time.
Magic, obviously, would be worse than all of these guys from distance.
