I assumed Mint Condition was popular in their time...

off top of my head, as far as a band, and a actual band not just a group of singers. I can think of Tony Toni Tone.

they are the first ones i can think of, off the bat who sold more and who I imagine overshadowed them in the 90s

Funny you mentioned Tony! Toni! Tone! because I started to mention them.

Going back and listening to their catalogue with an older more mature ear now they were dropping some heat too before Raphael decided to branch off and do his solo thing.

Even they were underrated for the time imo.

That Sons of Soul album was a straight classic to me, really hardly any skippable tracks and would probably be competing for a Grammy in a different era.

TTT and Mint are the go-to instrument-playing R&B groups in the 90s i can think of.

so yeah when you said other bands, i immediately thought of them.

Yeah, they were a band in the middle of the "hip-hop soul" era. I might say they only had one single that could be considered a crossover hit. They weren't doing remixes and featuring rappers on their shyt... not that there's anything wrong with that but that pretty much sums up why they weren't "big" at the time. They were popular, and that was amongst an older black crowd more than anything. Their music was more mature for the time, it wasn't like they had a lot of impact with the same crowd that was rocking with Jodeci, MJB, SWV, TLC, etc... you could see them on Video Soul but rarely on MTV Jams. You could catch "U Send Me Swingin" on the radio but not as much as "Freekin You" or a Boyz II Men song. Highly respected tho'.

Facts. Some of our favorite records actually flopped in real time:to:

I don't think ppl understand how many of our classics didn't get a run on the main charts or with mainstream. Like Mint Condition videos were a staple on BET when I was a kid so they're just ingrained in me at this point platinum plaques be damned.

Legendary group. Not mainstream popular but more of a niche/cult popular. It’s because of the band thing. That was not popular after the EWFs and LTDs and such. Yeah they were like The Roots of R&B. But crazy talented and Prince wanted to sign them and they ended up with Jam and Lewis. Stokley is one of R&Bs most respected and talented artists ever. He was recently on R&B Money podcast, check it out!

Yep, especially stuff prior to the 90s- much of the 80s in particular was rough on R&B music. It did great on the "Black Singles" charts but some of those hits were barely part of the overall Hot 100. Those charts are no metric for certain artists. There's songs like 'Before I Let Go' and 'All In All' that Black folks love forever that charted hella low when they were out.

Absolutely. Staples in our community, things played at every function or cookout that mainstream never ever paid attn to.
