Because the album came out when they were 1. It's not of their generation.

You was like 6 when Illmatic dropped, how did you comprehend it that it was the greatest thing you've heard?

My decision stays still tho, Illmatic is not for me.

Heard it as a freshman in high school......I didn't start listening to music till middle school
Unlike most kids I went back to check out "classic albums" some I didn't like some I did

Maybe he heard it when he was 16? Ever thought of that?

@thread

Besides the bulk of the production on Illmatic is an acquired taste---even by 93/94 rap standards. The manner in which some of the songs/hooks are arranged is pretty classic in structure too.

Meaning even radio rap fans back then in early 94, before his source rating came back and crushed the buildings, probably ain't fukk w/ it because sounded too "underground" hence its lackluster initial sales..

Appreciating Illmatic (in particular and unlike other rap classics) actually requires an understanding and general appreciation for the progression of the hip-hop sound

Illmatic is a glorified mixtape that revisionist sheep try to act like is the greatest album ever

Ready to Die had mad hype behind it I remember this specifically,Juicy, funkdafied and thuggish riggish bone were getting heavy play summer 94 nikkas were highly anticipating the biggie smalls debut that fall cuz the juicy single had unbelievable on the b side.Illmatic wasn't on that level

Not to be on no fake stuff but I saw a whole comment list full of Facebook people saying Nas got served up in that battle with Jay-Z. They said Takeover was better

Some of yall dont grasp that not every person in the world trying to be this huge hip hop head. especially when there is no incentives in being that

Obviously we're talking about someone who is a hip hop head or calls himself one. I don't think you HAVE to like certain albums but at least show respect and don't just hate for no reason like "it's old/out dated" because that's bullshyt

i never said i wouldnt listen to it because its dated or old. I havent listened to it because I am not hype enough with all the music out here to go back & throw on Illmatic for an hour or 2. Yes I could put the album on while I'm doing nothing, but then the music becomes a chore to listen to and I wouldnt really be feeling it like i could be. I would rather play something I'd want to listen to than something I feel I just gotta throw on

Its all about relation. if nikkas cant relate they wont fukk with it.

Basically saying nikkas that dont be in the streets or have that hunger/street mentality do not understand/relate to Illmatic.

Young nikkas now are lost. If nikkas are rocking cheetah pants with UGGs you already know their steelo.

Most tri state nikkas relate though, so fukk them other nikkas.

I'm from the tri-state and I don't give much of a care for Illmatic.

to me what it says is they dont take hip hop seriously in a way (not that u have to), i realize hip hop is entertainment but hip hop comes from a certain place and ppl who take the music serious should realize that and respect it. its like if youre a young basketball player and u dont recognize the greatness of a bill russell or MJ...they dont have to be ur favorites all time but u should at least appreciate what theyve done for the game.

and if u dont wanna listen to it theres not much i can say about that, i would just suggest that u do but if not:manny:
