Funny story.

About five years my mother had a lesion on her hand. Had it checked out at the doc and was told it was a benign melanoma tumor. They "burned" it off with nitrogen. She called my dad to tell him the news. His country ass response? He asked, "How long do you got?", not knowing the difference between benign or malignant. My mom, doc and nurses literally were on the floor laughing.

=====

Not so great story.

I got my first job working at a seafood restaurant @ 15. Every year, the owner paid for the kitchen crew to go deep sea fishing. My friend and I were the only two black guys on the trip of about eight guys. We were cracking up laughing inside with that look when the white guys were putting on sunblock. When we were satisfied with what we caught that day, we moved up top side on the small island and slept on the couches as the boat traveled back to shore.

Well, when we woke up, both of us had severe headaches, nausea and backs, chests and arms that felt like they were on fire. I never knew that the water from a shower could hurt that much. We were peeling for days. I'm talking sections of peeling skin as large as plate in some areas. I'm about Denzel Washington's complexion and my buddy is about a shade or two lighter than Ida Amin.

I'm thinking that the open ocean doesn't have the kind of pollution normally found on land that gives some protection to persons with more melanin. Out in international waters, you get a full dose of the harmful type of ultraviolet rays and that's why we got sunburned.

I never got sunburned while I was in the Navy though. It was probably due to always being clothed and required to wear a hat outside.

Not so great? :dahell:

At 15, you had an all expense paid trip to go deep sea diving? :ohlawd:

People on the Coli swear we are superheroes :mjlol:

Black people can indeed get sunburn and do get melanoma. It’s not as common as white people though. However we usually catch ours late and die from it at a higher frequency due to ignorance and lower percentages of regular check ups.

Being in the sun for long periods of time regularly and burning (burning is the key here...you not going to get cancer if your skin is effectively blocking radiation. So you nikkas talking about about jogging and playing in the sun like every fukking person in the world does can chill lol) puts you at higher risk for cancer. And yes, Black people can burn if we’re out in the sun regularly in a place where the UV radiations are strongest like a beach or near the ocean

the sun in north america aint even that strong to be stressing out over shyt like this...

most nikkas dont even spend 30 minutes in the sun daily, talkin bout sunblock :mjlol::gucci:

specially knowing how vitamin D deficiency is the #1 cause of so many cancers and illnesses thats killing us at ridiculous rates...

anybody who tells u as a black person to stay out of the sun is suspect....

u gotta be properly hydrated tho... drink alotta water...

I actually use sunscreen everyday to moisturize my face now because regular lotion would leave my face too greasy or dry now it’s just perfect :ahh:

Well, I use to think that as well, I'm black no sun block for me. Until I was on the Malibu beach without sunblock protection, for about 4 hours. I had the worse fukking burn on my forehead, and nose ever. My complexion is middle of the road between dark and brown.

heres the full study u linked to....

basically on the rare occasion when black folks get skin cancer, its usually not from sun exposure...

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1111/bjd.13380

In order of decreasing frequency, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), Kaposi sarcoma, malignant melanoma (MM) and basal cell carcinoma (BCC) comprise the most common primary cutaneous malignancies in sub‐Saharan Africa.

Comparative studies confirm this trend for natives of South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Tanzania and Sudan.

Which is why Black people should supplement Vitamin D. Not stay out in the sun 5 hours at a time without sunblock.

Black people get skin cancer. Our skin depending on how dark the shade it is can give some protection so we can stay out longer. But you can and will get sunburnt if you stand up in the sun in between 10-2 especially in the tropics.
