Story time

In February, I interviewed for a high-level finance position at a research university. I ended up having about 6 or 7 different interviews. Each interview ranged from really good to excellent. The employer asked for references.

At the same time I was interviewing at the research university, a recruiter from an elite university reached out to me asking if I was interested in applying for a Finance Exec role.

I was super confident I'd get the first job, but I didn't get it. It came down to me and another candidate. The other candidate had 2 masters and about 5 more years of experience. I was disappointed but I don't put all my eggs in one basket.

The elite university put me through the ringer, 5 interviews. I ended up getting an offer there. It was a higher paying position, with more responsibility (50 direct reports vs 12), a bigger budget (20x bigger), and I was happy to accept.

I missed out on a good opportunity and was blessed to receive an even better one.

Keep your head up OP.
Follow this guys technique for applying for work.

I know we laugh and shyt on each other on here and I try to keep my personal stuff off of here for the most part. But I have a really good job that I love and have been slowly moving up.

I went for a position I was certain I had. Interview was perfect but they just told me about an hour ago I didn't get the shyt.

I had know fukking idea I would feel this disappointed and worthless tbh.

I'm telling yall because we are a community and I'm ashamed to tell my friends and family.

I tried so fukking hard for that position

I don't even care if yall make fun of me I just needed to vent

Sorry

Just keep at it and grind. On the market currently. Had one rejection last week and received another by email today just before another phone interview. :yeshrug:

I was honestly thinking back to a time I applied for a role and I didn't get it.. multiple times, knew it was in the bag..just to get the job filled try again BS email.

Each time, I came out ahead by not getting the role. One of the roles were in a department that was recently sold to another company. Another role, they lost funding.

if you don't mind, what type of role was it?

It happens to everybody. I can’t see how people switch jobs every few months. I’ve gone to interviews and it felt like an orientation. I was driving home thinking like when do I start… I didn’t get it, and the reason was they didn’t feel like I had enough experience doing something I do every single day. But they just didn’t ask me that.

I did end up getting something better that pays more and I’m working from home instead of the 30 minute commute. I know there are a bunch of atheists on this board, and I don’t mean to offend anybody,… but God always has something better for you.

Keep your head up. Stay solid, never kiss any ass, and keep grinding. When another door opens up, and you put your 2 weeks in, they'll be begging you to stay. Make sure to let em know why you're leaving. Don't know if there would have been a substantial raise or not, but they say to switch jobs after 4yrs, because you probably won't get the raises you deserve.

Why are YOU ashamed that THEY couldn't/didn't see your value? You said you tried hard, that's really all you could do. Being disappointed is perfectly natural, but hold your head up high while you're feeling down.

I'm in the same exact boat as you OP. I applied for a position in December after I was strongly advised to do so. It looked like I was going to get it, but at the last minute a stronger candidate applied (internal as well) and he got the position. That shyt hurt a lot more than I thought it would. Only difference is I didn't tell my family I was applying because I didn't want to have to answer a bunch of awkward questions if I didn't get it.

I actually thought I had it in the bag until the very last minute we had a zoom meeting and he said I did not get it. I was sick. It's been like 3 weeks now and I'm finally starting to feel better. Keep your head up.

I lost my junior position like this. Even the recruiter was surprised by this.

Are you a good worker? If so thats ya first mistake. Hardworkers/good workers are hardly ever rewarded. They'll sell you bullshyt to keep you "happy" but when it's time for them to show you how much they appreciate you, you gonna be hella disappointed.

This is what I've always said. Memorable workers >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hard workers

It happens to everyone man.

I try not to get my hopes up.

Just today I had a phone screener today, just keep myself fresh for the interview process. A lot of times I’ll take interviews for companies that I have no intention of working for because they do the same shyt to us.

Truthfully I do it so that I have an idea of what the compensation market look likes, the different benefits companies are offering and most importantly, to not get complacent just in the event that they do hire and or offering significantly more.

My inbox is regularly hit up with recruiters asking me to apply. Even today as shytty of an interview I gave they were curious as to what stage of the job process I was in, in case I got hired by someone else.

What you did is called a heat check, it’s common among candidates these days. If you act like you are serious about your abilities but not super serious about taking the job if you are currently employed, chances are better you’ll be pursued.
