"They ain't do shyt for me", they probably done more for you than you realize but you probably the type to think "well it's their friggin responsibility, pal".
The most basic obligation is that of a child towards their parents. It's what kept human societies going since the beginning of time. It's why most cultures in history, across multiple religions, have taught respect and honor for one's parents. You need that inter-generational loyalty if you want to have a cohesive society.
Modern society has inverted this (peep what I said about inversion in another thread, it's not only in gender relations that we observe this but also between parents and children) and now apparently the parents are the only ones who have an obligation towards the children and not vice versa. You can more or less disown your parents when they get old and frail and leave them to fend for themselves, however society still recognizes the parental responsibility. This is unprecedented in human history and is certainly a contributing factor to the social problems we face as a society - many of whome could be solved if we had stronger families and more inter-generational loyalty.
Now some ppl are legitimitely unfortunate and were given terrible parents who abuse them, manipulate them and do horrible things. In such cases, you can maintain your obligation from a distance. Nobody is saying that you have to be all up under their roof all the time or that they have the right to be all up in your business. You can maintin your rights while giving them theirs to the best of your ability. It's not a zero-sum game.
Some ppl will recognize animal rights before they acknowledge the rights of parents. Crazy.
