Being a good writer and being a good rapper are two different skill sets. Some people can do both, but others can only do 1 of the 2. Some of you are clowns for not understanding this simple concept...:francis:

might as well call out Dr. Dre, Kanye, and everybody else who don't write their shyt.

He won't. They're too powerful. It's all about pandering to the pretend hip hop heads by shooting down easy targets.

Funniest part is when people try to compare singers not writing their own stuff to rappers not writing their own stuff. Having an amazing singing voice is the talent in singing, Whitney Houston could have sang the alphabet and it would sound amazing because she could sing her ass off. Rapping is basically speaking rhymes, the talent is the rhyming, so if you not writing your rhymes then what is ur talent? Beyonce and Mariah (Old Mariah) will sound excellent singing no matter what they're singing...cause they can SING. Cardi B and Bhad Bhabie tho? They got coaches and writers and cheat codes and all that shyt in the studio with them just to rhyme a 16 bar verse. shyt should be unacceptable, salute Flex

No it's not. The biggest talent a rapper brings to the table is flow, which is like singing. But in speaking form. Flow is how you pronounce words and get them in rhythm with the beat. Rakim revolutionized the game first and foremost with his flow. Lord Jamar even said "Rakim introduced the calm flow." Think about it. Almost every rapper since Rakim rhymes calm like Rakim. Yet not all of them rap about the same shyt as Rakim. In fact, very few do. Think about it.

Of course a rapper should write his/her rhymes because rapping is basically poetic conversation. And when you're having conversation, it's two or more people exchanging thoughts from their own heads in a direct manner. You wouldn't converse with someone else's thoughts, would you? Sounds stupid, right? Imagine if you asked someone what he/she thought about his/her favorite food e.g. pizza, and his/her response was exactly the same, word for word as someone else. You'd be like :what: Direct conversation is personal. The whole point is to speak YOUR thoughts.

You can sing someone else's song, and that's totally fine. Songs represent whole groups of people. There is very little that is specific or personal in the content. Writing, in a conversational/poetic sense, always represents self.

i have no problem with it. you still have to have the talent to deliver it properly or it wont work

its like giving rhymes to david letterman for instance (dont ask me why i mentioned him of all people lol dunno) with reference vocals. is he gonna make a hit record? hell no because he's not a rapper. you gotta have the talent

This is so obvious I wonder why we're discussing this in 2018. You can't claim to be a deep hip hop fan and not see this.

I used a Bill Clinton example once. You think Bill Clinton can't write better rhymes than at least half of all rappers that have ever rapped? He's certainly smart enough. But if you ask Bill to rap them shyts, he'll be one of the worst rappers you've ever heard.

THIS. The talent in hip hop is the creation of the rhymes. Not reciting them. There's a lot of people in the world who will sound great reciting a Jay-Z, Rakim, Nas, or BIG rhyme. There are very few who could sing a Whitney, Patti, Aretha, or Gladys song and it's gonna sound good.

Complete bullshyt :laff: You need to go to one of them Hip Hop Karaoke parties :dead:

Flex is a clown.

He (like a lot of you) is just still mad because Drake made him and Meek Mill look like fools during that beef.

Drake ended Meek’s once promising career and forced his girl to leave him.

Flow is often constructed by the way the verse is written and most songs today with ghostwriters have the writer spit a reference track for them. The rapper might sprinkle a little of their own unique touch into it but that little contribution ain't enough for me to consider them a top MC. When people talk about writing, part of that writing process is how the flow and presentation and perspective is constructed along with the words that's actually said. The Bill Clinton analogy is a terrible one and downplays how much skill is needed to actually write a dope rap song. Just because someone is intelligent with an extended vocabulary don't mean they got skills to rap. I can bump and listen to a rapper that don't write their own shyt with no problem. What I think that most people having a problem with is when they place these artists among the greats who do write their own shyt. The general point Flex has made in the past is that if you don't write your own shyt you shouldn't be considered in the top ten.
