i haven't used Siri once since the first month i got my iPhone. at first it was like a cool toy to play with but day to day its useless to me. i tried Google Now and felt the same way about it.
Google Now is MUCH MUCH better than Siri, its not even in the same league.

That's the difference with google now, at least on android. You don't have to use it, it just tells you stuff and organises data and info for when you need it all without prompting.
Effect on battery for having such a program always running or is it server side software?

Yea this shyt is great on Android. It automatically tells me how many miles I ran in a month, tracks my items bought on eBay and amazon, tells me what the traffic coming and going to work looks like, what restaurants are in my area that I might like, and lets me know when my flight is late or alternative flights to take. shyt is really genius and actually useful compared to Siri.

As far as I can see, zero effect. And I've never heard anyone say its affected battery in anyway. I'm guessing it runs server side software as I don't think you can use it offline.

Google Now is constantly polling GPS for location. When I turned off GPS/Location on my HTC One my battery life went up dramatically. Like night and day.

So even though it does most of it's processes server side...it is constantly waking the phone and using the battery to pull GPS.

This is only getting attention on iOS right now; Google is denying that there's a bug. But I'm seeing it first hand with my HTC One.

I turned off location on my nexus from day one when I got it and google now still works fine. Though I think there are some location actions its asks for.

It works fine, yes, for general information. But it notifying you of nearby restaurants, nearby events, distance from home and a few other things - don't work automatically. Which to me are the best parts about the app.

Once Google acknowledges the battery drain problem and fixes it I'll re-enable location.

What you're getting is a combination of Wifi based location information and regional information. Meaning, concerts that are playing in and around your zip code or near the last Wifi hotspot you connected to. So the information might not be that accurate if you're far away from your last wifi spot with location turned off. Hell, even 30 miles away you're going to not get accurate information.

Example:
If you travel to Virginia with location services turned off and you don't have a Wifi connection to hook up to. Google Now will attempt to use GPS to find out the information it needs. If you do not have a Wifi hotspot and GPS turned off....you're not going to get a listing of Virginia restaurants and you're not going to get local Virginia weather or any Virginia related information.

I live 15 min outside of a major city. With location and wifi turned off I'm not going to be able to get "restaurants near by" when I go into the city (just 10 miles away) on my Google Now because it has no clue where I am.

it's too bad that with location turned on my htc one's battery is depleted 33% quicker.

Have you tried the Juice Defender app for Android? My phone use to die ridiculously fast before I discovered that. Some people say the free version works fine for them, but I bought the full version and that made a big difference.:blessed:

Theres not gonna be a time where GPS doesnt kill your battery breh. Its constantly polling satellite data to retrieve your location. Thats why GPS is so harsh on battery life

Google Now will still tell you about nearby restaurants and events without GPS being on...

Also, The One has a power saver mode that works pretty well. You should try that.

Not if it can't connect to an wifi access point. So, like I said above, if you travel out of the state with location/gps off and no available wifi access points you will not get relevant location information. Google Now uses Wifi first, location/gps information second, and if all else feels just uses whatever region your address is in. It has no other ways to pull location info.

I'll check out the power save feature.

That is odd. My GPS & WIFI are almost always off and Google Now will still tell me about local events and restaurants...

It may be that Google turns them on for a few seconds sporadically to gather this info or that it can be gather using 4g / LTE / 3G.
