Is both respect and courtesy given freely or is respect earned and courtesy given?

I've been trying to figure this out because some say respect and courtesy should be a given.

But to me it looks like it has to be earned based on the definition.

Which do y'all think is right?

Give courtesy freely but respect has to be earned.

Respect is off top, disrespect is earned. I try and treat everyone with a degree of courtesy unless they do something really egregious to me or someone that i have a high amount of respect for.
