That’s a very expanded usage of the term, so I’m not quite sure I understand in this context.
My high school sent kids to the Ivies. So the smartest kids were also the most popular because they were wealthy and their parents had the resources to provide for tutoring and esoteric athletic extracurriculars like lacrosse, water polo, crew or golf to make them the most attractive candidates to these schools. Because they had exposure to many different things, it rounded out their socials skills. So you had the combo of intelligence, athleticism, social skills, and money that made a student popular.
The black kids were a little bit different and had their own rules. Had two sets; those that grew up in the area and those that were bussed in. Those that grew up in the area were assimilated and fell somewhere along the popularity scale based off the above factors. Those that were bussed in didn’t really ascribe to those measures and so popularity was derived from how close to the streets or how “real” one was perceived. Those of us that were viewed as assimilated were the farthest thing from that so they clowned us for it. We weren’t black to them. But no one was ever clowned for being intelligent or the expanded usage of the term you presented. Because in fairness, some of them were smart too. They weren’t as popular because they segregated themselves, which made them lack the social skills to be able to interact with everyone or they didn’t have the money to go on spring break trips or summer travel that gave you popularity points. Most were athletic though so that made many of them known.
The low hanging from them was “you don’t act like us or ascribe to the things we do, so we’re going to clown you for it”.
To get back at them, the low hanging fruit for us was “you all are poor and ghetto and embarrassing us”.
As black kids, we were extremely immature and cruel to one another, moreso than the white kids. But never clowned one another on smarts. If anything, we got in good with the kids who could help out on papers or cheat on exams. And they were respected because of it.
