I have never seen anyone look down on smart kids in the black schools I went to.

Depending on where you from.

Back home nikka all the smart kids were respected because they parents had money and everybody kind of kicked it like gang because parents aint spending thousands of dollars to fukk up and drop out or else life gets very hard.

This is secondary school we talking not university yet. :francis:
Hell there isnt even lunch breaks nikkas just sitting in two or three rooms in a sweaty ass uniform all day ready to throw the books in the trash :russ:

Happened in my middle and high school. Both were majority black. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

how many times has this comment been made in this thread?

but according to about 45% of the coli, it doesn't happen at all

Never seen black kids clowned for being smart.

In school, I was clowned by other black kids for being assimilated, “acting white” as they called it or not being black/street enough.

We in turn clowned those black kids for being poor and trying to gang bang in upper middle class suburbia which we thought was goofy and ghetto.

Those two and being socially awkward were the only things I’ve seen black kids go at each other about, not actually being smart.

Smart in this context means a whole set of things.... intelligent, interested, attention to detail, flexibility, focus.

That’s a very expanded usage of the term, so I’m not quite sure I understand in this context.

My high school sent kids to the Ivies. So the smartest kids were also the most popular because they were wealthy and their parents had the resources to provide for tutoring and esoteric athletic extracurriculars like lacrosse, water polo, crew or golf to make them the most attractive candidates to these schools. Because they had exposure to many different things, it rounded out their socials skills. So you had the combo of intelligence, athleticism, social skills, and money that made a student popular.

The black kids were a little bit different and had their own rules. Had two sets; those that grew up in the area and those that were bussed in. Those that grew up in the area were assimilated and fell somewhere along the popularity scale based off the above factors. Those that were bussed in didn’t really ascribe to those measures and so popularity was derived from how close to the streets or how “real” one was perceived. Those of us that were viewed as assimilated were the farthest thing from that so they clowned us for it. We weren’t black to them. But no one was ever clowned for being intelligent or the expanded usage of the term you presented. Because in fairness, some of them were smart too. They weren’t as popular because they segregated themselves, which made them lack the social skills to be able to interact with everyone or they didn’t have the money to go on spring break trips or summer travel that gave you popularity points. Most were athletic though so that made many of them known.

The low hanging from them was “you don’t act like us or ascribe to the things we do, so we’re going to clown you for it”.

To get back at them, the low hanging fruit for us was “you all are poor and ghetto and embarrassing us”.

As black kids, we were extremely immature and cruel to one another, moreso than the white kids. But never clowned one another on smarts. If anything, we got in good with the kids who could help out on papers or cheat on exams. And they were respected because of it.

It s not that difficult, technically you can be smart, a screw up and fail all at once.

People catch slack for paying attention too much, caring, staying home studying, doing certain extra curriculars, participating, hard work, showing interest. These are executive functioning skills that are critical for success and mentoring opportunities. When I was in school these things were looked down upon and attacked.

So when Someone states blacks are looked down upon because of smartness they are not simply speaking about raw brain power and knowledge obviously. It’s clear these other traits which are being hinted at when using those types of statements. Same with acting white.

I don't think I would ever have picked these things up so thank you for enlightening me.

I was clowned for being articulate and speaking proper English. Which is something I wish black kids didn't do. Nobody shows up to corporate America speaking the way we do here.

But I don't think I was ever clowned for being "smart" or doing smart things. So I agree on that.

This is just like with people being teased for being dark skin, people got teased for it but the people doing the teasing weren't being malicious, and usually only kept going due to the non reaction,or fake laughter of the person getting clowned. Its the same deal with smart people from what I remember, you would get jokes about how smart you were but nothing really malicious.

Definitely not true. I remember going to school with a girl who was very dark skinned and the kids in our class would tell everyone that her skin resembled the color of feces. I never forgot that and I can't imagine what damage it did to her self esteem.

How old were yall:picard:
The kids at your school obviously weren't creative if thats what they were coming up with smh. I'm not counting little kids who are just yapping to be yapping, little kids were out for blood. I remember being mercilissley teased about my clothes as a kid. But I still don't remember any real bullies where they were out to just make you cry everyday.

The problem with this whole conversation is that it's all about perception.

A smart kid, who's socially awkward and a little weird (like some smart kids tend to be) is gonna be food.

But a dumb kid who's socially awkward and a little weird is gonna be food too.

A smart kid who's good looking and confident and charismatic is gonna prosper socially and academically

Virtually ALL of Black America's heroes from Frederick Douglass to MLK to Malcolm X to Shirley Chisolm are smart, but they also were charismatic people who knew how to talk to people. They're not awkward.

Whereas, everybody remembers that dumb ass kid in high-school that everybody clowned
