I have never seen anyone look down on smart kids in the black schools I went to.

It's not solely about being 'smart.'

Let's not pretend that kids didn't dumb themselves down as they got older. It wasn't 'cool' to like school. It wasn't 'cool' to be interested in learning. I got less interested in school as I got older. Back in the day everything else was more important than sitting down and trying to learn: sports, clowning, what kind of shoes you had, girls, etc.

This topic seems to depend on when you actually went to school. How many ya'll remember when video games (that weren't NBA/NFL) were seen as lame? How many of ya'll remember when anime (that wasn't DBZ) was seen as lame? This stuff just recently became popular in the mainstream (last 10 years). It wasn't always popular enough to be widely discussed in black schools. Back in the day you had to keep some of your interests on the low because you'd get mocked for having them. You had people you hung with who knew what you were talking about but trying to be open about certain stuff would paint you as a lame. The same went for actual interest in school subjects beyond sports, band, etc.

Even the 'smart' folks (who didn't dumb themselves down) had to put on a front to pretend like they were 'cool'. And ya'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I believe I started to notice this in the transition from middle to high school. Certain folks acting brand new, people you knew in middle school turning their nose up to you, being apart of a click, etc. Hell, anything else was more important than school work.

But is this unique to Black schools?

Like I said, watch "Saved By The Bell" or "Revenge or the Nerds" or any 1,000 White sitcoms and movies.

Are White/Asian nerds considered cool?

Of course not.

@The Amerikkkan Idol you hit me with a lot of emotion here, let me attempt to keep it fact based for you

1) John mcwhorter is openly critical of the culture of anti-intellectualism that as an educator, he felt hinders us in the classroom, thus hinders us in life - he wrote a follow up book called “WINNING THE RACE” << that’s something someone who hates black people would do?

2) I posted that video showcasing that Barack agrees that the “acting white” thing exists.

3) I posted that video to illustrate that Barack has been criticized openly as not “black enough” as it cost him an election - he knows a lot about this topic - with that said he was a lackluster president, did NOTHING for our people - see how one has nothing to do with the other? :pachaha:

1. How would a guy like John McWhorter who's not a part of and has never been a part of our community know what the hell hinders us in the classroom or life?

That'd be like me writing a book on what the Latino community needs to do to improve their lives.

2. Who cares what a biracial dude raised in Hawaii & Indonesia thinks about Black people?

How the fukk would he know what it's like to grow up being Black.

3. Again, your argument is that he's not seen as "Black enough" because he's "smart". That's the the thread is a bout, nikka.

Bobby Rush is just as smart as he is and wayyyy Blacker, so what the real issue?

And yes, Obama being a lackluster president has EVERYTHING to do with him being a White puppet ass c00n who knows nothing about the Black community. That's why he thought he could just show up and sing Al Green and make everything gravy.

Really...

So what are you saying he is not Black enough?

Now you just done shoot yourself in the mouth
The phenomena known as "acting white" is more predominant in schools that are mixed with white and black students.

Wake up your experience does not equate to every one else experience

Who said every Black person lived in the hood?
What if you not from the hood you not Black?

They are both talking about African American experience. in this case they are address the "acting white" development in certain segments of the black community.
We all do not experience the same things in the same exact details....we are not monolithic society

.

Yes, being the only Black person in your community makes you incapable of being Black enough for this discussion. NEXT.

Obama & McWhorter are the epitome of dudes who are not Black enough.

Black don't mean "hood". It does mean having regular contact with other Black people though.

nikka did you just try to justify the fact that I was getting shanked in middle school? Based on clothes or shoes.
:scust:
If I could reach through the screen I would slap you like the bytch you are.

I saw a young black boy get shanked in middle school and almost lose a kidney. There is no justification for the shyt.

nikka, you aint gonna do shyt, but get shot, with yo bytch ass. :pacspit:

I seriously think there are 2 types of people that post on here

- people that post as themselves, as in people who would say the same things offline that they would on here

- dudes who are in character...playing a "role" or whatever, pretending to live another life altogether completely different from the one they lead in real life

that's the only way I can explain all the bullshyt in this thread...I mean look:

there are thousands of these on youtube...but according to these dudes, it's all a myth :comeon:

All of those people are corny and lame as fukk.

You're not making yourself look good here.

Them: They don't like me because I'm smart.

The rest of the world: We don't like you because you're socially awkward, weird, act like you got aspergers, and are ugly as fukk.

I don't know how old you guys are (I'm 41), but it used to be true. Very true.

Back in the late 80's to mid 90's...if you weren't acting hard then you were getting clowned. If you were actually smart or were a nerd, then you got picked on.

It happened A LOT back when I was in school.

You had to be on some Beanie Sigel/SP the Ghost level of grimey where you regularly beating dudes down or robbing them to get attention. Hell, any time before Kanye West blew up, was when anti intellectualism was at its highest. I knew people that took pride on not having an email prior to 2004. I knew people that were getting in trouble with the law So that they can bag the pretty females. Mind you, this was back in the late 90s and early 00s.

Obama & McWhorter are the epitome of dudes who are not Black enough.

So now you are further ostracizing and excluding brothers.....the mind set that says you must find ways to pull down (crab in barrel) those among us who have won success. In fields of endeavors that require we use our academic and intellectual skills is a reflection of those of us who when in High School practice the hate of "acting white" against our own who demonstrated promise in intellectual fields of study.

Again, most nerds, really smart kids, are squares, and it continues into adulthood. Most find their niche, and have outside interests, but now we’re shifting everything again :mjlol:

A) This argument makes no sense; Mcwhorter, regardless of how you FEEL about him, is black. He details and speaks on his experiences of being labeled not "black" enough often
that alone makes him qualified to speak on the subject...If you feel he is LYING then that is another discussion altogether

B) Bruh for future reference, when you're in a debate - yelling out "WHO CARES" is a clear indicator that you're losing :pachaha:

again - somebody said that the argument of people thinking black and educated = white was psy ops government propaganda - if that is the case then peoples beloved OBAMA is spreading it as well

now again, whatever you FEEL about Obama as a man, or as a president is irrelevant TO THIS PARTICULAR DISCUSSION....I was just pointing it out.

C) I posted that video to prove that Obama was called "not black enough" by people so therefore he knows what it's like to be called that, even moreso than most of us

here's an article about that 2000 run to prove it:
In 2000, a Streetwise Veteran Schooled a Bold Young Obama
Mr. Obama was seen as an intellectual, “not from us, not from the ’hood,” said Jerry Morrison, a consultant on the Rush campaign. Asked recently about that line of attack, Mr. Rush minimized it as “chest beating, signifying.”

The implication was not exactly that Mr. Obama was “not black enough,” as some blacks have suggested more recently; his credentials were suspect. “It was much more a function of class, not race,” Mr. Adelstein said. “Nobody said he’s ‘not black enough.’ They said he’s a professor, a Harvard elite who lives in Hyde Park.”

there are other articles out there, just type "obama black enough" in google and all of them will show up.

all of this shyt about bobby rush being smarter, and you're arguing that him being a puppet blah blah blah...all irrelevant to the discussion of this thread.

All of those people are corny and lame as fukk.
.

I didn't read passed this....the only point I'm making is that the argument is out there, keep in mind this is a discussion about somebody questioning that the argument even exists

I've proven that it does. :manny:

I'm trying to figure out where you guys get this idea that black folks (black Americans to be exact) looked down or mocked extremely smart/book nerd kids in school because I never witnessed it. If anything what I seen was all the kids in school gave them props and complimented them on how intelligent they were, even the kids who gang banged or was in the streets gave them respect to the point were some were noticeably envying their continued success of getting good grade after good grade. Now I'm not trying to downplay anyone's experience, I'm just saying in my personal experience I haven't seen it.:yeshrug:
I had the same experience. The smart folks/ jocks were the same people and got a lot of love. My school was probably 60% Black.

Y'all telling a goddamn lie.

I remember getting shanked(nikkas would sneak up and stab you with sharpened pencils or pens) for being in the gifted program in middle school. Leaking in 5th period and shyt. Y'all can miss me with this bullshyt you telling.
sounds like some of you nikkas was just lames who couldn’t defend y’all selves.

just because you was a nerd or a lame dosent mean you can’t defend yourself or have some type of respect and boundaries you can’t cross, somebody stabbed me with a pencil in 4th grade and I respectfully whooped his ass, last time that happened, this is coming from somebody who went to a horrible school.

I'm saying in all my experience, I've never heard of it, never heard anyone say anything of it, until the internet.

Further -- even if someone at some point associated "academic achievement" with "acting white", that's a long way from it being a "thing" permeating black culture. I seriously doubt that the people who say it happened to them actually heard those words (instead of them merely INTERPRETING their experience that way). It's truly hard to imagine a scenario in which one black person would say such thing, let alone it being repeated like it's some cultural adage.

...And I'll add this: a lot of those people who push this slander are actually people who would take "acting white" as a compliment, who look down on black people and endeavor to distance themselves from black people. Don't discount the complexes of those people and their inclination to turn to the web to vent them. There was a black guy in my high school for example who only associated with white. He straightened his hair and would play frisbee with his white friends in front of the school. Of course, this attracted a certain degree of antipathy from the black kids. I bet he's one of the ones going around saying he was accused of "acting white" for his academic achievement (if he was anything special in that regard).

Regarding "talking white" -- there are those people who indeed "talk white". It's a clue that they call it "talking proper" (in spite of their using certain slang). They call emulating the white accent and white slang as "proper", complete with a value judgement, when in fact what they mean is "standard". Those kids might be accused of "talking white" because they're the first black generation that sound that way, or because they deliberately cultivated that accent. The ones who go around with their asses on their shoulders, claiming they were tormented for "talking proper" offer a clue to their mindset. People like that are out there.

... But black people calling achievement "acting white" is a bullshyt idea, spread to paint black people as stupid. BLACK PEOPLE DO NOT THINK LIKE THAT. Black people don't hold white people in such esteem that they would think like that, nor do black kids hold black people in such contempt that they would say such things.

Those youtube attention whores going on about being accused of "acting white" are likely self-congratulatory azzholes who enjoy putting black people down in the process. (I'm not going to watch their vids, but do they actually say they're accused of "acting white" because of academic achievement, or is it just their personalities that earned them that?) Either way, this issue is wrapped in a FOG of bullshyt, not the least of which is the EVER-PRESENT campaign to put black people down, so I'll just go by my own experiences (as someone who knows a decent amount of young people)...

This shyt is just an internet thing that has taken on a life of its own. It will fade away as people forget to keep repeating it. I think that's happening already.

Black people do NOT call academic achievement "acting white". The hood rat kids don't have whites on their minds like that, and the middle class kids (from mixed areas) wouldn't even perceive academic achievement as "acting white" -- it would be just a normal thing that people around them do. ...So then who is repeating "academic achievement is acting white" such that this would even be a "thing"? Answer: THE INTERNET. Internet racists (of all colors) endeavor to put down black people and prop white people up.

I can't picture a scenario where black kids would go around calling achievement "acting white". No way am I buying into the bullshyt that this is some widespread cultural thing. Just on the basis of STYLE -- that shyt would be too corny for black kids to run around repeating.

And you bet your ass, this is just the start of it. We're going to see lots of similar slander about black people in the internet age. Black people are going to need to learn to vet their impressions of black culture carefully, and ask themselves if it jibes with their own experiences. The internet will have you thinking in ignorant cartoonish caricatures about your own kids if it could.

*Breh pulls out fallacious evidence*

Oh yeah, he pulled out evidence, just like Fox News pulled out evidence of Obama being a Kenyan socialist terrorist.

Learn about the difference between ANECDOTAL & EMPIRICAL evidence.

Saying something is true doesn't make it true. It just makes it YOUR experience. That's anecdotal.

Facts are what make your argument true, and he pulled out ZERO facts, just anecdotal evidence from people who had TONS of other issues other than being smart.

Again you wrong he was not the only black person in his community and he most definitely was not the only person of color....you really revealing your ignorance of the facts.

Oh yeah, I'm sure there were lots of Black peple at the Punahou School in Hawaii and in Indonesia, where he was eating dogs.:camby:

I've proven that it does. :manny:

Dummy, Clarence Thomas & Ben Carson are technically Black. That doesn't mean they are considered representatives of our community, now does it?

McWhorter & Obama grew up FAR removed from the greater Black community at large.

That has ZERO to do with them being smart.

How come Black people embraced Malcolm X?

MLK?

Michael Eric Dyson?

Cornel West?

Aren't they all smart?

Cornel West taught at fukking Princeton for fukks sake. Where's all the people to accuse him of being White?

And yo ass think you slick because you lost the argument, you tried to shift it.

I NEVER said Obama wasn't ever called "Not Black Enough".

I said that he wasn't "not Black enough", not because he's smart, but because he had ZERO connection to the Black community.

Bobby Rush is just as smart as he was and nobody's saying that he wasn't Black because he had a CONNECTION to the community.

Obama's a fukkin' c00n and you know that.

Why you're trying to act like Black folks ONLY hated him for being smart is ridiculous:heh:
