It seems to me that Christianity, and religion as a whole, became a scapegoat for certain deeply human vices, just like political partisanship, bigotry and many other paradigms.
Some people attribute exclusively to religion the same delusion, cognitive biases, cruelty, warmongering,... that express themselves through humans whatever they believe in, as shown throughout history.
Maybe it's too much to accept that as a species, we just have inherent cognitive flaws. Or maybe it is a cognitive flaw in itself to believe that simplistic categories, such as religious belief or political affiliation, taken in a vacuum, can help us establish a legitimate view of how people think.
