naw, in general Macs ARE built better than PC. I deal with PC's all day everyday laptops and desktops. everything right from basic cheap shyt to $10,000+ laptops

I am NOT gonna sit here and say I've never experienced or seen problems with macs at all cuz that wold be a lie. They are not perfect. BUT they ARE far more reliable and last much longer. OSX is a far more reliable and stable OS as well.

We can nit pick either one all day. Both have positives and both have negatives. IMO it all comes down to preference and requirement because unlike what most ppl would like to claim the price is alot more comparable to each other when you consider all the factors.

There is a reason why I still dudes rocking 5-6 year old macbooks and everyone with a 2-3 year old laptop(windows) is either looking to upgrade or complain all day about how its laggy and can't keep up anymore.

What laptops u got coming in that cost over 10k plus? And before u start googling, most expensive laptops run from 3k-8k. So u must be fixing them gold plated Mac books and Bentley made laptops :ohhh:

Macs aren't even that expensive anymore. You can get a retina display macbook pro for something like $1200. $2500 ain't that expensive for a 5K computer, when the cheapest pc 5k monitor is $1799 (and that's just for the monitor). Yeah, you can't game on macs, but you can't game on a pc 5k monitor unless you have $2K worth of graphics cards either. The whole macs costing too much shyt is just a myth.

Where I work I have guys that require secure and ruggedized equipment (military) which is very expensive.

Basically running high end laptops that have been reconfigured to limit electro emisions
stuff like this

Hoinestly I don't really play games on my Mac but I have been known to dabble in starcraft2 a bit.
but the whole "can't game on macs" thing is a little dated.

Again I don't really game so I don't know whats new or whats hot that the kids are playing these days but I just did a quick search
Don't believe the lies! There are plenty of great Mac games

and it looks like there are a bunch of good games there.

I'm talking about graphically intensive AAA games. A lot of those never come to the mac because the gpus are shyt in macs

Was at the Apple Store today. That screen is straight sex but I feel that those getting the base model will be plenty upset. I was watching YouTube and the damn thing was struggling to play high res clips. So 8gb ram not enough and that hard drive is slow. If you're going to throw down that much cash you might as well cop the fully loaded joint with ssd and throw in some more ram. You may get more screen real estate but that isn't worthy of dropping 3k on this thing. Most of the content will look blurry and grainy. Kinda like when you had an hd tv but cable was only providing SD content.

Not hating because I'm trying to find a valid reason to buy this thing cuz I want one. Still feel Apple needs to overhaul the OS. Think if the OS was better and not so limited these pricey macs would be worth it no questions asked.

For those saying macs are overpriced. Microsoft is selling a $3k laptop so maybe apple isn't that crazy.

Mac is definitely over priced pound for pound. There's no debating that.
The experience you would have at home vs the apple store as far as streaming would very likely be different. At least it was in my case.
I agree that if you're going to get a mac you should definitely avoid the base models. Budget permitting max out the processor, video card, and get an SSD installed. Get more ram if you can but if not, put it on your to do list for things to get later, as you can find ram cheaper online anyway and you might be fine with 8GBs in the beginning.

is it really that much overpriced though?
I mean last year when I bought my mac 4K monitors were going for like 1200 or more(some up around 1900) and that was for a 4K MONITOR with no computer.
these are 5K, beautiful screens and just blow away the competition.
In fact a similar 5K monitor right now from Dell is like $2000
Dell UltraSharp 27 Ultra HD 5K Monitor with PremierColor - UP2715K with 3 Year Warranty : | Dell

so is it really that expensive?
You can get a 27" iMac for that price

I know it's become cliche for alot of ppl to hate on apple and complain about price, but they really aren't much more expensive than the competition for a similar quality product.
iMacs, iPhones, macbooks, etc.

As for keeping costs down, don't bother about buying the extra ram or SSD from apple right away, the computer is perfectly fine out of the box to do what most need to do. then later on you can make those other upgrades.
just don't skimp on the processor(go i7, that will last years....)

The screen definitely is impressive, but thats about where it stops with the 5K imac. Dollar for dollar you'll get much more horsepower out of a PC easily.
I'm a mac guy so Im not bashing it, just being realistic.
As far as keeping costs down, opening an imac is not for the feint of heart and I definitely discourage it at all costs.
An imac is definitely something you need to get the most you can on day one. Ram is going to be the only quick upgrade, and the only upgrade that will not void your warranty.

Thing is, what would be the cost of a similarly spec'd PC? I don't think it would be that much cheaper if at all.

Going strictly on performance I've actually been considering going for a maxed out mac mini instead of the 5K imac.
I lose out a bit on the processor and video card but I'm wondering how much performance will I gain in PCIE flash storage vs the fusion or ssd drives. I know with the mac pros apple touts the pcie storage as a major talking point.
Right now I'm using a 2009 imac 27" with 2.8GHZ intel i7 and 16 gigs of ram. I run pro tools with a ton of plug ins with no hiccups. I also run final cut pro with no issues at all.
The 5K screen on the new imacs is definitely impressive, but for me, I think its more of a talking point than practical. Gaming is going to be better on a PC off the strength of compatibility alone so 5K isn't anything to brag about in that regard. It really comes down to watching streams, or editing video. I don't have a 4K camera so no real gain there. Streaming I'd rather do to my 60" TV in the living room.
Im not 100% settled yet. I'm going to do more comparisons and read reviews before making a final decision.

Depends on your budget and how much that 5K monitor means to you.
I would say for comparison sake lets put the monitor to the side and talk actual performance.
@Ciggavelli
What are some reasonable PC specs you can expect with a $2,000 budget?

Just for broad comparison sake, and PC heads can crucify me later, but I'm working with a $3,000 max budget for my next computer.
Apple
$2,999
5k iMac 27"
  • 4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz
  • 16GB 1867MHz DDR3 SDRAM - two 8GB
  • 256GB Flash Storage
  • AMD Radeon R9 M395X with 4GB video memory
Windows
HP Envy Phoenix Performance Desktop
$2,999

  • 6th Gen Intel Core i7-6700 (3.40GHz); Windows 10 Pro
  • 6GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980Ti Graphics
  • 1TB SSD; 6TB (3TB x 2) 7200RPM HDD
  • 64GB DDR4 RAM; Blu-ray Writer
  • 600W Power Supply; Liquid Cooled
Some key points to consider:
You won't be able to easily upgrade or repair your iMac. (You really don't want to open up that $3,000 computer and screw something up and void the warranty).
The iMac is going to be using a laptop graphics card and not a desktop one.
If you plan on gaming, you'll be very limited.
Performance wise, dollar for dollar, a windows PC will smoke an iMac.

So why do I have apple everything in my house?
I produce music, and I have been using Logic and Pro Tools for way too long. I'm stubborn as far as those go. Logic is not available for PC and in my experience with comparable systems, Pro Tools runs better on Mac. Also I like to have thunder right out of the box. Some of my studio equipment is strictly thunderbolt and I'd like to keep things simple.
I also have a ton of expensive plug ins and I don't have the interest in buying new plug ins for any new windows specific programs.
You really have to ask yourself what you need.
I've been fine for 6 years with the same imac which is weaker performance wise than some of the base model imacs today. The only reason I'm going to be upgrading is for thunderbolt ports, and because I'm getting a substantial amount of student pell grant funds in a few weeks.
