I just got promoted to Program Manger from Sr. PM and I still haven’t passed the PMP. The promotion was offered so I took it but don’t really care like that. I’m kinda over corporate and thinking about transitioning out. Starting my own consulting firm and using my PM skills there. If I retake the PMP it will be strictly for appearances. I do have my SCRUM Master though.

I’ve heard the new exam format is much easier. If that helps anyone.
What is a scrum master?
Who would be your clients if you start your consulting firm?
What do you do as PM?

Scrum is a form of Agile. There is no external client contact but basically you have these meetings called sprints go strategize with your team to solve issues and provide resolutions. There are clients all over as Project Management can be used in every industry. It depends on the need of the customer. The guy that taught my class who is a brother that started the company with his wife says he would consult independently all the time for companies like Capital One. My role varied because I was always one of the most knowledgeable. I was always operating in a hybrid role between projects and process.

Out of curiosity, why would a company hire a PM as a consultant when they can hire an in-house PM?
I thinking about getting the PMI cert because the military will pay for it and I'm trying to research if it's valuable

breh I would get it. My resume submittal response rate was low af before I got my PMP. With 12 years of EE experience. As soon as I put that PMP at the end of my name…I started getting interview after interview. Eventually getting this gig which was a 15% raise from my last job.

It is highly valuable! PMP is always in the top 10 of most valued certifications. People will hire anyone to do a job. And PM’s are valuable in industry especially as consultants and contract workers. You get that PMP and you can write your own ticket especially overseas in places like Dubai.

Why is your rep in the negatives? You are one of the best posters here.

This is facts. I work overseas in the middle east for an oil and gas company and i can vouch that the PMP is heavily valued over there.

I'm planning on getting mine before the end of this year, preferably by end of November since I usually travel for a long vacation from Dec - Feb. Either way i'll get it done in Q4 or by end of Q1 2022.

Ultimately i want to segue into becoming a consultant as well, and inevitably relocate to Dubai. The thought of being able to rack comparable or more money, have the same tax-free expat benefits, but not have to work a 9-5 (or 7 to 3) annnnd to live in a muuuuch more appealing and flexible environment (UAE)... mannn, that's all i think about these days.

So i've been putting in the work getting different certs and building my experience. The PMP is next on my list.

Just passed it on my first try too :salute:

Interestingly enough, mine was mostly SCRUM and Agile-centered questions... no EVM calculations, barely any this or that philosopher questions...

The last 80 or so questions were a cake walk; I didn’t even bother going back to review bc I knew I’d passed.

- It was MUCH easier than I expected.
- No EVM formula questions.
- a few float questions.
- I took it from home, using the Pearson website. Someone monitors you the whole time using a webcam. You have to take photos of the environment to verify there’s no cheatsheets around. I put my hand over my mouth while thinking over a question...the proctor messaged me tellling me to move my hand.

I took the Udemy prep course. It was only $12 and it included the 35 classroom hours required for the test.

I used the pocket prep and PMI prep apps to run through test questions.

how the career been a year after passing?

Literally changed my life lol. Left the federal govt after twelve years, got hired in May by a software dev company. Fully remote project manager…splitting my time between the project management office and the IT department. I’m getting invaluable experience that sets me up for even more rewarding positions in the future. My only regret is that I waited so long to do this lol
